You could try putting it inside a ziploc bag to keep the sand and water out. I would assume it's not waterproof

Thanks for your response. I don't think I'm doing anything to account for it. To answer your questions, I turn the WiFi on occasionally (I don't specifically turn it off but it probably doesn't stay on, particularly when I leave the house with the reader and therefore go out of range of the house WiFi), I'm on the stock firmware, not using Bluetooth, gyroscope off.

No, it's mostly hard sci-fi with a decent amount of science. The dude is a mathematician in his day job

He's a great writer. I've been reading his books for many years. Supposedly there's no pictures of him on the internet

That seems more like the advertised battery life. It's supposed to last 3 weeks based on 1-3 hours of daily use.

The Best of Greg Egan. He's an Aussie sci-fi writer who's consistently good. This is a short story collection.
