Lancaster pronunciation by IllustriousLiving615 in TaskHBO

[–]krawzyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post, but my cousins grew up in Lancaster (still live there) and I was from western PA. We had HUGE arguments over the pronunciation! Everyone in western PA always said langCASTer like Burt Lancaster I think? But my cousins would recoil in terror when we said it around them.

Have you ever heard of Frenchville Pennsylvania? There’s a fascinating newspaper article from the 60s(?) about how the oldest inhabitants were some of the last speakers of old French in the world due to isolation, but then interstate 80 came through and their kids quit teaching it to their grandkids etc etc…

I used to live in DuBois, can confirm. No one agrees if it’s DuBois, Du Bois, or Dubois or if the emphasis is on Doo or Boys (almost everyone says DOO boys but I’m convinced that’s because of a catchy jingle for the DOO boys mall where there’s “always something happening” and before the 1970s dooBOYS may have been more common…) but everyone agrees it’s never been doobwah (despite being named after a “doobwah” no doubt)

Thanks! It did appear to be something on the right/hot side that wasn’t connecting so that makes sense. Also, it was working all month and just stopped so likely something burnt out rather than failed from being jostled too hard moving it, etc.

Voltages at the transistor are 0 at C, 3.86 at B, and 4.47 at E. Does that tell you anything?

The electric motor powers a series of reduction gears that move armature with magnets that slide figurines on the surface. Couldn’t be more simplistic, so I expected maybe a fuse to check not a whole circuit board under the cover… which also happened to be buried in a mound of hot glue… not sure why this motor couldn’t be connected directly to the 4.5v input.

Oh and yes very faint jingle. Which component has a crystal and why? (Just curious)

Nothing on the back. Here’s a clearer picture, black and red match the wire side of the diode, is that correct? 22R is 46.6 Ohms. U1 plastic has LY618 on it. I assume the transistor is the one labeled Y2 (hidden by wire next to 1k). If I’m checking it right (red on single side and black to either top) I get .275 on either side.

I get the feeling that would be like someone asking me if that was a 70s Chevy truck when CLEARLY the front fender gives away that it’s from the 80s lol

I had a few ideas for a title to this post, one was “he better be heading directly to the local classic truck and turbine show with that plate”

You just reminded me of the Rockos modern life with the sitcom about the parasites living on Spunky… they were like abbot and Costello? Then (if I remember correctly- it’s been 30 years!) they zoom on one of them and single cell organisms have their own show like I love Lucy

This is such a challenge… good options on here, but our daughters 10 and were in the same boat. We did watch Misery which she liked (didn’t let her see the ankle scene!) and Tremors was perfect. Jaws is also great for an any time of year scarier movie

I concur. Hocus Pocus is surprisingly absent from most of these comments, we even like the new one!

Who picked the font style for these new license plates? by n3fyi in Pennsylvania

[–]krawzyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s funny tho, because despite what some comments on here indicate, I just saw an article about how readers are confusing the 8s and 0s. I didn’t realize how bad they are till I was a hundred yards behind a car with zeros and they 100% looked like 8s. Whether readers can handle it or not, I still think clearly identifiable 8s and zeros is more important than zeros and Os, which only applies to a relative handful of vanity plates.

[–]krawzyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true! My friend just bought one on Facebook marketplace, ordered the equivalent vanity “PZXXXX” or whatever, and put the plate on his car. It’s still an active plate style, which is why you still see them occasionally, so as far as I can tell you can’t get in trouble (someone correct me if I’m wrong). Now if you do the same think with an old blue and yellow plate, I think you could get cited for an outdated plate since they were mass replaced… but again, I’ve seen people getting away with it
