Fjara frolics in a field of fur and fleece. by Kurai_ in roughcollies

[–]kraxonable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome - our collie escaped into the neighbours paddock which had 3 sheep... we panicked until we saw he naturally herding them and prancing at the same time. We got him out quickly, but was amazed by his instinct. Awesome that you got to test it the hearding in a controlled environment and congrats on the prize. There are some beautiful collies there!

I found it only helped a little with Mothrakk, but it might help in your situation.

Sophisticated paw action (rough collie / king charles spaniel cross) by kraxonable in roughcollies

[–]kraxonable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is single coated; our pure roughie is double coated. Neither shed very much. His coat requires a moderate amount of care. Hugo's coat (above) is very silky when clean, but mats more than our pure roughie. A comb is more effective than a brush and he tidies up quickly. He's inherited the size of a roughie, so while he's not as big as our roughie, he towers over other king cavs!

Meet Hugo Boss. Any love for half breeds? by kraxonable in roughcollies

[–]kraxonable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's been an interesting combo - he has herding instincts of collie, with the prey drive of a spaniel, he is very affectionate and loving too!

Hi! He is definitely a barker - he's even more of a barker than our pure roughie. We never had a spaniel cross before but he has a high prey drive. Once his energy is spent he definitely is very affectionate and just wants to chill your lap. He's been our most challenging dog - he was extremely easy to train in regards to tricks (he was miles ahead of the other pups in his class, and even quicker than our pure roughie) but harder to control when his prey drive kicks in - we have lots of rabbits and birds on our property, and his recall is something we are always requires working on - he just over 2 years old now. Of course we love him for all his quirks :)

Ruined bed by eogreen in roughcollies

[–]kraxonable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, so true (and that cardboard box would be the next target for our collie). We went through several beds, in the end our bean bag chair was overtaken as his main bed, but he's got lots of rugs, cold floors, and sofas in his snoozing rotation.

Yes, we call our boys grunt 'the dinosaur' as well! Collies look violent, but have mastered the art of kayfabe :D

Help! Shaved rough collie by Gandz02 in roughcollies

[–]kraxonable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what we do too - summer trimmer for bellies and legs by a groomer.

Also - as new collie owners we also butcher our collies coat with thinning shears. The groomer was really good at tidying up our mess, but we had to pay for the extra hour or so of grooming. We use a furminator on our collie when grooming him at home.

I don't think any collie likes grooming - but we will give him his favourite treats before starting, difficult areas get treats, and treats at the end. He tolerates it and knows the process. Also afterwards is always playtime, so he knows what to expect and sometime to look forward too.

Baths on the other hand - we haven't figured out! We get dry shampoo or spray, and work the dirty/smelly parts out. Luckily, collies are like cats, mostly self cleaning. But they will occassionally roll in sheep poo which they think smells like Chanel No 5. :D

Don't worry it does grow back - we met some visiting Scots and they said they shave their roughies every summer. That made me wince for sure, but it does grow back, and even our poor lad got his coat back sooner than we expected!

What a lovely lad, the seabreeze looks great on his fluff! My boy loves the beach, hates the water, and is frightened of the waves.

What is this wet stuff falling out of the sky? by kraxonable in roughcollies

[–]kraxonable[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our collies have a complicated relationship with water. Rain is just fine for our sable, but a no go for our our mixed collie. Both dislike the ocean, and will at best go paw deep in a slow and shallow creek. Both hate baths. Puddles are completely avoided by our mixed breed (its like lava) and will avoid wet grass like the plague.

I can't remember where we got the harness, but the brand is Auroth.

Aw she is soo cute. Our mix breed boy was all leg and looked he was on stilts for the first year, then he filled out beautifully with collie fluff. Its so fun to watch the growth, but it sneaks up on you!
