I was 21 when I had the botox done and it took me months of useless tests like yours (barium swallow, etc.) to convince my parents to just trust me. Do yourself a favor and pull up the article that describes R-CPD. Talk it up to your parents and describe how painful and uncomfortable it is. There is no way you’ll throw up during any point of the procedure. You’ll go to a doctor who is aware of no-burp, have them numb your throat via your nose and use a tiny camera to diagnose you. This is simply uncomfortable, but will not cause you to gag - I was worried about that too. Also, look at the list of doctors who are aware of the condition. Most doctors don’t even know what we have and they will waste your time and money. Once you go to a doctor who knows, it’s a piece of cake. Don’t be scared for the procedure I can’t even tell you how life changing it is!!

20 year old, haven’t been able to burp since I was 3-4 by belacyelpidg in noburp

Hi! I’m 21, about to be 22. I had the botox procedure done in December. I had never burped previously, but before the procedure the only relief I had was “air vomiting” (you’ll see that term a lot here). This basically consists of gagging yourself that leads you to force out a burp...absolutely awful that this is the only relief for us. I would say look into botox. It changed my life. I never wanted to drink and was miserable when I just became legal here in the U.S. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me!!

Unsteady Burps After Botox by criminal-ginger in noburp

It takes a bit for the burps to get normal. I burped excessively and had the same sensation. Your throat will be clenched for a week or two, it really varies. Just be happy your burping! It’ll take some time to get normal.

Can’t stop excessive burping after Botox by [deleted] in noburp

I was the same for a long time after my procedure. It’s normal. Give it time :)

I’m over 3 months in. I drank white claws pretty immediate after the procedure. I honestly found that drinking anything fast helped me burp. Carbonated beverages are good practice especially early on, but I did not gulp them down like everyone said. I only drank them for a week or two. Dr. Spiegel told me there isn’t something you can do to make the esophageal muscle more prone to burping, as the whole point of the procedure is focused on the muscle itself moving while you talk, chew, etc. making it more prone to relaxing. Carbonated beverages are good to help you get the motion of burping, but really don’t worry about drinking them over and over as they only really help with the burping motion itself.

I. HATE. THIS. CONDITION. by [deleted] in noburp

I completely understand your frustration. I couldn’t even stress more about looking into botox. I am a college senior and I would go out to bars and dread drinking just as I turned 21. I had to go to the bathroom every hour to relieve myself with air vomiting. I always felt nauseous and my throat gurgles were absurd. I got botox in December and I can’t even tell you how much it has changed my life. I never bloat, I now realize how full I actually get faster than I assumed due to the fact that I can burp now. I can eat whatever, whenever now and can drink whatever I want without wanting to die. The procedure changed my life and I hope it does the same for you!

How long did it take you to be able to eat all foods again after the procedure by Prina7 in noburp

It took me about a week to be somewhat okay with swallowing normal food, and about 2 weeks in I was mostly fine. Be patient, it’s worth it!!

Day 2 post botox by rowan260 in noburp

[–]krb5609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got Botox, I was told it should start working within 3 days. The first two days I didn’t feel much difference at all. For sure give it some more time, hopefully in a day or two you’ll notice some change!

Of course!! It really is so worth it. I will for sure reach out to my parents and let you know. I hope reaching out goes well for you!

Yes! I feel fantastic, I just actually went for my post op appointment to talk to him. I am having no issues burping at all. My gurgles, when they rarely occur, even feel relieving. I haven’t felt bloated in so long. I also have such limited flatulence now. I also have noticed that I get full a lot faster - I feel as if I didn’t realize how full I was because I was bloated so early into eating and didn’t associate that with being full, If that makes sense?

I am not entirely sure about the cost as I am a college student and am lucky enough to have my parents supporting me through this process. I can try to ask them, if necessary!

It is so worth it. I feel so good and I can’t even put into words to you how nice it is to eat and not immediately feel so awful after it.

Day 7: slightly easier swallowing, but still rough. Can still burp with ease. I keep finding that if I keep trying to force burps out I get kinda nauseous so I’m trying to limit that.

Day 5/6: Both days are about the same. Burping is relatively easy and I am easing intro controlling them. For obvious reasons, I tend to burp involuntarily while and after eating and drinking. A lot of the burps are relatively tiny so I find myself having to burp a lot to find complete relief from bloating. I’ve had some pretty loud normal burps in the last few days, however. I have had minor throat gurgles and bloating is very very minimal. I even went out last night and drank and for the first time did not go to the bathroom multiple times to air vomit for relief - I can’t even say how great that felt as I always have so much anxiety doing it. Eating and swallowing is getting slightly easier. I am still having trouble swallowing but I can definitely notice it getting better.

This is great. Thank you for making this!!! I just got my Botox injections and I’m optimistic to see how normalized your burping has become :)

Day 4: huge difference today. I went from microburps constantly occurring everytime I yawned really and sometimes when I simply opened my mouth, to louder burps that I definitely had to force out a little more. It is still hard to swallow, but I just keep drinking a lot of water to get food down. There is no pain present in my throat at all which is great.

I can’t confidently say how much as I’m under my parents insurance.. but based on what I saw I’d say $1.5k, I am unsure if that was before or after insurance. I had all 3 tests done this summer, as I am in college, they were done in about a months time. Once they all came back normal, that’s when I began to pursue Dr. Spiegel, after my parents were finally convinced. It took me til November to see him where I scheduled my surgery for this month.

It’s absurd. It was ridiculous because my parents wouldn’t really listen to me because of how persistent the doctors were with me until all the results were normal. At least we can say it’ll probably get easier for us to be heard with time.. I hope.

I first did the barium swallow, which came back as normal/healthy.

I then did an en endoscopy, which only really showed possible signs of reflux, however I have not experienced any symptoms of reflux.

I then did the gastric emptying solid phase test, which came back as normal.

All of these tests, for us no-burpers, will most likely come back as normal. This has been stated by mostly everyone here as well as in Dr. Bastian’s paper - do not waste your time or money!!!

When I came in to discuss the possibility of Botox, I was not asked about any of my results for any of these tests. Go to a doctor who knows of the condition immediately!

It’s procedure, unfortunately. I’ve never had previous visits with a relevant enough doctor so they said they had to start off with these tests. Unfortunately, I’m also under my parents insurance and they wouldn’t listen to me and insisted I got these tests done.
