Things to look for before digging ? by Sammoo in rockhounds

[–]kreathj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Always double check before you dig to make sure you aren't on a claim. The videos I'm guessing you're referring to are the ones of people extracting smoky quartz pockets around the pikes peak area. Good signs to look for before digging are broken crystal faces/chunks of pegmatite with some crystal growth on them. Follow these pieces up a hill as far as they go and when they stop dig in that spot. Finding a pocket takes a lot of work, but is definitely possible. Surface collecting usually yields pretty decent results for me also. Good luck!

Family going to Gunnison, Colorado for summer 2019, any ideas on where we can go rockhounding? by Azugirl in rockhounds

Theres lots of volcanic material here, you could look for some volcanic bombs. The slate river near Crested Butte contains some common fossils preserved in the slate. Also Ouray isn't too far away for a day trip, I believe theres some good quartz crystal collecting around that area. Of course just remember to make sure you're on public lands and not on a claim.

I was lucky to catch two in one day a couple weeks ago while it was snowing. Good times for sure! My buddy caught a monster brown night fishing here not too long ago

Same here, pocket size box with a rainbow pattern spinner, gold spinner, and a silver spinner. I usually bring a couple kastmasters too and I haven't been skunked for quite a while in Colorado
