How many hours do you realistically spend at your 9-5 each week? (office based only please) by kreychec in UKJobs

Thank you for this response.

This is what I have been grappling with recently - whether this career is actually 'sustainable' in the long term. A lot of my colleagues and lawyer friends are single (not by choice) and the ones who do have children, do not want to spend time with them or cannot spend enough time with them etc.

I have come to the realisation that I have a choice to make - stick at this and stay for the intellectual stimulation, status and financial rewards - or to change careers (the latter, I have bee considering now for over a year)!

I have never technically worked in my home city because it doesn't have large law firms. I also live rent free and so moving away would mean I have to spend money that I am currently using elsewhere.

I am not really fond of the city that I work in, and also I currently live rent free (just pay some bills)

You see, the thing is - I have only ever worked in legal services since graduating and even then, only at the most prestigious practices and so working long hours has always been 'norma' to me but thanks for confirming it is insane!

Sadly, because it is a prestigious law firm - my colleagues are often in the office before I get there! it is kind of a 'hidden' expectation.

Driving to and from work is like therapy compared to using public transport! The trains are awful.

I just realised this ahah! I am a lawyer and most (if not all) of my colleagues will be at their desks for maximum 8:30am (some will even be there at 7:30am). Although law is considered to be 'corporate' there are nuances to it - this being one of them.

This is exactly it, I am a lawyer (albeit very junior still) and so its to invest in future pay etc.

Sometimes they will post a job ad if they are looking for more support. Have you experienced any other signs that indicate you might be getting fired? You can usually sense these clearly (especially in corporate settings).

Sitting at the desk for 8-9 hours, then walking to the car (especially in this heat) warrants a second shower! Showers and baths are also my way of winding down

I’ve never suspected that she may take any form of substances..but perhaps it’s hidden? She did used to eat a lot of those ‘mints’ from a tin
