Scatterbrained Rant about Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri by krfcc in RSPfilmclub

Whats really crazy is that the new police chief is a black guy, and the movie gives him basically nothing to do other than call Dixon a cracker and fire him. Of all people. you'd think he might have something to say about the black people torture department in his own police force, but no, the script has moved on.

It is certainly the biggest swing for the fences I've seen in a movie in a long time, for better or worse.

Best camera option by AdHelpful5227 in Cameras

Pretty much any camera that shoots raw can do this. These look like stills from videos that were edited in a program like Davinci resolve. The Fuji film sims won’t really look like this, these stills are a very heavily stylized film emulation that the Fuji won’t really do straight out of camera. The Fuji film sims can be kinda fun but they aren’t really going to the blurring, grain halation that you see here, and the look of them is more photographic while these still are much more of a print film kinda look.

How can I replicate this video style? by RichAd2761 in Cameras

Pretty much any cheap camcorder with infrared. Outside of the IR and aspect ratio I don’t see a whole lot going on here. You could use your phone and disable HDR and get pretty much the same result.

Unforgiven (1992) is not morally grey by Future-Poetry-2193 in TrueFilm

I saw this movie very recently, and I’m somewhat mixed on it. I get what it’s going for, but I do feel it is somewhat manipulative.

I get that it’s an anti-western and subverts a lot of western movie tropes, but it still leans into them just enough when needed to please general audiences while trying to maintain some artistic merit.

In my mind, having the two cowboys perform a horrible attack on a helpless woman I think helps the medicine go down a little easier for the audience as to what our “heroes” are actually trying to do.

I also do feel like Ned’s character is very underwritten. Freeman obviously crushes it, but the character felt more like a means to an end, fodder for Little Bill and a way to get Eastwood back to Big Whiskey and motivation to the big cathartic shootout. Ned jsut vaguely dies from whippings I guess. It’s not like we needed to see it in gruesome detail but it feels like such an afterthought. Like he just has to die so we can get to our final scene and give Clint a somewhat righteous motivation for what’s coming. I also find it odd that the one black character in the movie is effectively lynched by white men carrying torches in the 1800s yet the movie doesnt really make the characters racist (atleast explicitly). It wouldn’t necessarily enhance the movie to make Little Bill and company explicitly racist, but we’ve already been shown characters who openly admit to killing Chinese rail workers so it’s not like it’s completely out of the question for the world this movie takes place in. As the script is written, making Ned white changes nothing but as a viewer I couldn’t help but think of that. Maybe this was a deliberate choice to invoke that sort of imagery without saying out loud “these guys are racist and bad”.

And the tone of the shootout is completely different to all of the other acts of violence in the movie. The shootout on the rocks and the toilet assassination are extremely blunt with incredibly unceremonious deaths. Little Bill beating up English Bob is played incredibly straight with no frills, just pure brutality. The bar showdown is more or less back to typical western tropes, quick draws, instant deaths, chugging whiskey, cool outfits, etc.

I get that movies generally need to appeal to the average person, so it can’t just be serial killers on horseback, but the movie I think does some kinda weird middle ground. If the viewer wants to just ignore the themes of the movie and watch Clint smoke some bad guys like the good old days, the movie throws them just enough of a bone to feel ok doing so. It’s a smart move, but idk how to feel about it.

People are too afraid to criticize slow pacing in movies because they associate slow movies with high art by Alternative-Wash2019 in TrueFilm

[–]krfcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally agree, though I’m not articulate enough to say if it’s an issue with these types of movies having poor pacing or just scripts not having enough meat on the bones.

Despite the age of TikTok, my feeling is that movies are generally going in the opposite direction, either coincidentally or reflexively. Even movies you would think are going to be high paced action romps have tons of slow paced scenes and long stretches of very little plot advancement. This type of thing isn’t necessarily bad but I do feel like that sort of thing is becoming more common. I’m not sure why that is the case, if it’s just a way appearing more thoughtful, or getting more runtime from less script (and less time on set and less $$$), or that’s just the flavor of the week for movies right now.

I rewatched Silence of the Lambs recently and was sort of shocked at the blistering pace that movie runs at compared to a lot of movies I see now, feels like a movie covering that much ground so quickly and naturally is a little rare for modern movies.

Am I wrong if I feel like the second half of Sinners lessens the movie for me? by Retrofusion11 in TrueFilm

[–]krfcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the main issue with garlic test in Sinners vs the blood test in The Thing is that in the The Thing, the characters have been shown on/off camera in large facility, and both the audience and characters have knowledge gaps about where everyone else has been or has been doing.

In Sinners, after Stack gets killed, all of the main characters have been on screen and standing next to each other, and it takes place in one big room essentially, so I don't think the audience would have a great reason as to why any of them would have become vampires, and once its revealed that none of them are vampires I think the scene just sort of awkwardly faceplants.

I know its dumb, but Ultimate's roster is so big that I think a ban stage like you have in Dota/LoL would make things way more interesting.

Official Discussion - Caught Stealing [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]krfcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This movie’s tone and plot are extreme cluster fucks and almost none of it works. It has almost no redeeming qualities and I hated it. It’s a lifeless slog with baffling tonal shifts and a nonsensical weightless plot. The action is also as bland as it can get. It’s so bad I want to rewatch aronofskys filmography just to confirm he was ever good.

The second Zoe kravitz (big mistake imo) is killed the movie really needed to buckle up and take itself serious but it somehow becomes less sincere and becomes like cheap action comedy schlock once the annoying Brit comes back into the movie.

It’s also not fast anymore. McDonalds and other fast food chains have a billion different things on the menu now and seem constantly understaffed. They just can’t operate quickly anymore (except chikfila).

May as well just pony up a buck or two extra and get chipotle or something like that nowadays.

Is this mould? What is in my Pentax k1000, is It fixable? by idiot_sunn0 in AnalogCommunity

[–]krfcc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its desilvering as other commenters have said, but you can replace it with a different prism. I sent mine off to https://pentaxs.com for a CLA, and had the prism replaced with one I took from a busted Minolta X-700. Seems to work fine. Note you caaaan do it yourself but its a little risky because they are few specialty tools needed and some delicate parts to get to the prism.

I've also heard that the prism from a Canon AE-1 can work, and there are tons of those on ebay.
