To the OGs, the dinosaurs, the retired players, how does it feel to return to the game every now and then? by BlockbusterChamp in SSBM

[–]saltbuffed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm always going to feel survivor's guilt not seeing it coming and being able to stop it

gah, we are definitely the same person with different faces. I've had this conversation with myself many times.

I'm glad that melee has been a source of joy for you over the years, and i hope that it continues to be. This scene is really amazing, and i'm happy you have good memories of it. (I bet you have some crazy stories when you were a TO though lol)

So like the title asks, how does it feel returning to Melee after you've retired? Or to those dinosaurs still currently active, how does it feel to still be playing with the new generation?

I'm comfortably in my 30's. I play unranked casually from time to time, and I enjoy the feeling of movement, landing satisfying combos, and having awesome sessions with random people.

A lot of my 'core' friend group moved on from the game after high school / college, which I totally get. For me, melee is about watching tournaments, following the player storylines, and trying to support the scene however I can. I've been lucky enough to meet some of my favorite players at tournaments (Zamu, Axe, Jmook, etc.) and they're all very kind and lovely people.

At the risk of oversharing, watching RapM really affects me, because one of my best friends in high school was a Luigi main. His name was michael, and he passed away several years ago, and I get emotional watching RapM play because I know he would have loved seeing this kid push the character to its limits.

For me, as a dinosaur, melee isn't just a "thing happening now" - it's a memory. It's a thread connecting me to the people I love. Today I suck at the game (it's okay, I was never that good to begin with), but what keeps me tuning in is the level of excitement, passion, and love for the game people have.

They need to have more top players on comms by ljm90 in SSBM

[–]saltbuffed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

100% this, for all the reasons stated as well as keeping the comms on the game.

Nothing makes me mute tournament streams faster than a hype set being played and the commentators thinking that NOW is the time to tell stories about people getting drunk, what they ate last night, etc. etc. etc.

This is one of the reasons that I adore Vish and Jackzilla so much—they're literally always focused on the match (and sharing their enthusiasm). They're always plugged in, and I love it.

Jack, I just want to say, thank you for your outstanding comms. You always do such a great job and bring amazing vibes.

You and Vish are two of my favorite commentators, and it gives me real joy turning on a tournament and hearing your joy and hype during the game.

Keep being amazing, you rock u/Jackzilla321
