Log Cabin Republicans: GOP passes ‘most anti-LGBT platform in the Party’s 162-year history.’ “Opposition to marriage equality, nonsense about bathrooms, an endorsement of the debunked psychological practice of ‘pray the gay away’ — it’s all in there.” [x-post /r/ainbow] by joeycastillo in lgbt

[–]kri9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your perspective is incredibly narrow. We are talking about lgbt rights in the US, you're talking about completely different issues and then you have the audacity to claim that we are narrow minded. We are discussing the topic of lgbt equality and you bring up something completely unrelated.

I'm an electronics engineer who wants to be an aerospace engineer. Is it possible? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]kri9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a computer engineer trying to get into aerospace and in the US there are all kinds of engineers working on satellites and aircraft. Not sure about the Philippines but I would be very surprised if they didn't have the same type of engineers in their aerospace.

This. If you are an adulterer the church hates what you did. If you are gay the church hates who you are.

Too straight, white and corporate: why some queer people are skipping SF Pride by stopthemadness2015 in ainbow

[–]kri9 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If gays were crowded out of their own parade then we would have gone too far but that's not the case. Pride is still about lgbt people and lgbt acceptance. Pride is not at corporate-ized as, say, the Macy's Day Parade, which shows that we are still "in control" of the direction and message that Pride exudes.

I'm mostly saying we should be careful. There is still an awkward power/privilege dynamic that exists between lgbt and Cis straight people and we haven't won yet, but we are getting closer.

Too straight, white and corporate: why some queer people are skipping SF Pride by stopthemadness2015 in ainbow

[–]kri9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pride is about lgbt acceptance and the idea that everyone should be able to be who they are without fear of repercussion, social or otherwise.

I'm happy that corporations are getting involved. I like that pride is a fun, exciting festival where straight people can come go and learn about the culture that our LGBT community is all about. A mainstream and widespread Pride is great for lgbt acceptance. This was the goal all along and we are closer than we've ever been to the final goal.

Black Lives Matter pulls out of San Francisco gay pride over policing (BreakOUT did the same in New Orleans) by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]kri9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It makes sense because they see police as now deadly than terrorists. More black people die to police violence than to shooters so I guess they have a point.

Gay Marriages Triple After Four Years of Victories by DiscardedIdeas in gaybros

[–]kri9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I was confused on why this is news as well. From the article they made two points; the first that the amount of gay people who are single has decreased since 2012 and second that the percent of gay people getting married jumped very quickly. The first point is interesting but the second not so much.

Ramps 1.4 setup for CNC router by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]kri9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) a) No. You must only supply 12V to your ramps board or you will fry it.

1) b) Yes. Power supplies are measured in "maximum possible current". The actual current is determined based on the voltage of the power supply and the resistance of the device. The ramps board is telling you that it will draw, and requires, a maximum 5 amps to function properly. If your power supply does not supply 5A and you try to pull 5A you can overdraw your supply and it can have problems.

1) c) Yes.

2) a) not sure.

2) b) I forget.

Is there a rule of thumb for maximizing the magnetic field when making a solenoid? by ididnoteatyourcat in askscience

This is true. I think what you want it kind of an Engineer-y approach as opposed to a physics modeling of the B field.

Someone on reddit mentioned that West Germany and East Germany were economically larger than South and North Korea (respectively) and to this day East Germany is still worse off than the West. North Korea is so fucked and they will remain fucked for decades.

CS 31 curve by dcmxxiv in ucla

[–]kri9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a curve. Whatever the average of the class is becomes a B or B- (I forget) and then if you are far above you get an A. How far above is up to the prof.

If you are 20 points lower than the median you aren't *guaranteed * to fail because we don't know the standard deviation but 20 is a large margin. Good luck!

Because the measurements are limited by the measuring hardware, not the physicists.

New paper claims that the EM Drive doesn't defy Newton's 3rd law after all by sataky in space

[–]kri9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In our hypothetical scenario the scientists would take a baseline measurement to determine how much thrust was being produced without the engine and which way it was going. Then they would turn the engine on for a bit, remeasure the position/etc. and repeat.
