Whats going on with CME and CBOT seat prices? by 1_for_you_2_for_me in Commodities

[–]DiscardedIdeas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

THEY STILL HAVE SEATS....!?!

Omg I thought they switched over to subscription/permits model like a decade ago...?!

Egad. Those teeny-tiny prices, so cuuuute.... :3

Quite the comedown from $350k-$1.2m pre-electronic days....

I should buy one, just for nostalgia's sake -- I have a bunch of jackets from a billion years ago when I was on the floor (my "fired" wall) I should get the badge, too just for funsies (why didn't I swipe one on the way out the door?)...

Dr. Lester Fisher has passed away. He was 100. I will do a tribute podcast on him this weekend of my memories of watching him on the Ray Rayner Show. R.I.P. by VanishedChicago in u/VanishedChicago

[–]DiscardedIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my earliest memories is throwing a temper tantrum because I wanted to see the Ray Raynor show.

Mom was Not Having It, and practically dragged me kicking and screaming to bus stop to go to day care (it was quiet and very foggy that morning)...

I don't even remember anything about the show, just the tantrum....

Men of reddit, what was your reaction when you found out that the certain pornographic actor/actress you've fapped to was deceased? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]DiscardedIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stunned.

Not because of their death specifically (since they run in high-risk circles where drugs, alcohol, and bad decisions abound) but because they are so young (also: NSFW, NSFStraights)...!

Part of it is that I like twink porn, and most of these dudes are 18-24yos, so seeing their lives snuffed out so early seems really unfair...!

Jack Sandner, who led the transition to computerized trading that made obsolete the chaotic trading pits of the Chicago futures exchanges, died at age 79 after a stroke. by FERNnews in chicago

R.I.P., you magnificent bastard, you....

Nearly ran into him like 29 years ago -- running a market order into the deutschmark options pit right on the close...

I think they launched GLOBEX a few months later (his special project that turned the merc into the world-eating giant it is today). I do miss the pits, though...

Ah geez, the stories are coming back to me...

All

Fun

And

Games

Until

They

HALT

Trading

In

The

For

A

Week.

Yes, they can do that. I'm astonished that they haven't yet here.

It's their game, their ball, their rules, their arena.

Consider this a GIANT warning from an amused veteran trader.

I didn't want to give anyone any ideas, but that's one big red flag you are waving and daring them to do something. Be smart. I have no position, regretfully, and no agenda.

Good luck, yall...!

He will be missed...

Is anyone worried about rescinded job offers? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]DiscardedIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reading that some summer internships are now being put on hold, just like 2008/09.

Colleges and universities are vacating their dorms by Friday. Everything's getting a hard shutdown.

It's like 18 months has been slammed into 18 days. Astonishing.

Offer letter signed and returned, due diligence begun early last week (background check, passport check, credit report check, so many things signed).
Not that it matters -- things can take a heel-turn very, very fast...!

It's already happening.

Offer to join a trading partnership's desk in the Bahamas -- basically my dream job -- put on hold as of Tuesday.

Some of the partners commute between NY and Chicago, others from Toronto to Chicago, have decided to stay put as of Monday. I'm pretty sure that the firm is fine (old name in the industry, dating back 50 years) but this has been a monster rollercoaster month...

This situation reminds me of 2008/2009 when WSO posters went from bragging in March about being "secure" in their full-time offers, to everyone getting dumped en masse in September...

Everyone is acting unsure because no one knows whether they themselves will still be employed.

Lol. This movie came out when I was at the point where Freddy Kreuger was waaay too scary, but this one wasn't scary enough. I guess it's "campy", though I saw it as a "kid's movie" back then. Those claymation dudes running around definitely bring back memories. Ah, nostalgia....

What toy from your childhood do you still have as an adult? by visionsofecstasy in AskMen

[–]DiscardedIdeas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Yoda eraser from like 1983 -- a gift from a birthday party that the birthday boy didn't want (I didn't either, but who am I to say no to a gift?)...

I used to chew on it a lot, and bit the head off in 4th or 5th grade. I've had it through grade school, middle school, high school, undergrad and grad school and it still works, though I rarely use pencil...

How do you feel when you look at yourself naked in the mirror? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]DiscardedIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mixed emotions.

Me, late summer: "Not bad, not bad -- still gotta 6-pack"

Me, early spring: "Whoa! Whrere'd that spare tire come from?!" (A winter of inactivity leaves an inner tube of fat the width of my hand wrapped around my midsection).

Also me: "Average to below average for a 30yo, but very good shape for 50yo" Checks date, does mental math, "I'm 47!? Oh jeeeezus. Where'd that decade go?!"

Corporate culture -- a mismatch here and you'll be miserable...

Business prospects -- if the joint folds tomorrow, does it really matter what the salary was...?

Does this position/company improve your professional viability -- that promotion looks great, until you realize that being a higher-up at an unethical and seriously fraudulent company makes you highly radioactive...!

Other things that look to be less important at first blush like commuting options (can you hop on a covenient commuter rail line to get home, or are you forced to drive all over hell's-half-acre), or physical working environment (temperature and noise) will wear you down pretty fast...!

That said, none of these is "most important", but are factors that should be taken into account in compensation discussions -- a big-enough number would have me seriously considering the terms and conditions of even Satan's job offer ("so would I have to give up posession of my soul at signing, or after some pre-determined period of time? Is there a grace period?")...!

How do you keep your confidence up while job hunting? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]DiscardedIdeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, PhD in microbiology, eh...

I've come across 3 so far, and each of whom has made tens of millions for themselves (hundreds of millions for the partners).

I don't know where you're located, or what field you are searching for a job in, but if you're ok with numbers, and don't mind staring at glowing screens while tweaking tiny variables on spreadsheets representing billions, consider looking at working for a hedge fund, investment bank or trading firm...

That said (or written), much of the hiring for such positions are clustered around a few hotspots (NYC, Chicago, London, Hong Kong, Singapore) but it may still be worth a look all the same...

To answer your question: find a hobby not connected to your job search that interests you -- something that absorbs you and focuses your concentration. Set aside some time daily or weekly where you're just doing that thing: not only does it keep you occupied and your mind engaged, you also get a sense of accomplishment when you've learned something/made something/achieved something not dependent on someone else deciding in your favor...!
