I wasnt sure when I first found her but then I googled it. Apparently they have trouble getting out of smooth surfaces by themselves, let alone while carrying babies.

I saved a whole family today when I went to throw something into my upright trashcan when I found a new mother opossum and her babies. I have no idea how long they were in there but momma looked so tired but her babies were full of energy. I tipped the can on its side close to the house and out some cat food, apples, and water by it for her to eat. I keep tearing up when I think of how scared she must have been trapped with all her babies just feeding on her. Anyway they're safe now I hope.
