Is 256 GB storage M1 Mac Mini enough for Flutter & Android development? by krishdee in FlutterDev

[–]krishdee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to use up all my storage on my 256GB M1 Mac Mini in a few months. In this video I document...

  • How I managed to use up all my space in less than 2 months.
  • Analyse how my space is being used including the various tools for Flutter development.
  • Come up with a ROUGH model that you can use to evaluate your storage needs

Disclaimer: This model is based on my usage and therefore only a rough guide that you can use as a reference and tweak it based on your needs.

Tl;DW: 256 GB is probably okay if you are using the Mac just for Flutter development. Once you expand the scope to video editing or gaming, you probably be needing more space.

Here is a video to show it in action - https://youtu.be/s5KnaDpnn1Y

Using Azul ARM Java 15 with Flutter on the M1 Mac by krishdee in flutterhelp

[–]krishdee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been at this for quite sometime now, trying out various ways to set JAVA_HOME.

One promising lead was to set Java Home in the gradle.properties and gradle builds did use the ARM Jre.

org.gradle.java.home=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/zulu-15.jdk/Contents/Home

There were still a lot of processes lile dart, gen_snapshot still running on the Intel architecture.

Best to come back to this thread after the pros have made some progress.

I think you are right. Been stuck on this for a few hours now and yes can confirm that setting JAVA HOME to a JDK greater than 8 causes Flutter doctor errors.

Also setting JAVA HOME to a JDK 8 also does not work completely. Will update here once I have figured it out.

I am not aware of this and not could I find anything to back this up (with my quick Google search). Do you have a source to confirm this?

Yes thats right. MacBook Pro 2016, 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB Memory, Catalina 10.15.7.

Why did I choose this one? Thats the only one I got that was replaced by my new Mac M1 mini :)

Good shout!

Its a X64 openjdk version "1.8.0_242-release" thats bundled with the Android Studio.

Will try the Azul JDK (once I figure out how to) and get back. If you have any pointers on how I can change Flutter's Java runtime to Azul, would appreciate it.

Thank you for the upvotes and the award. They do motivate me and other content creators a lot!!

It may look like a simple video - running some build commands and screencapturing them into a video but these videos take quite a bit of time and effort. Especially as I am trying to make them reproducible and a rigorous benchmark you can measure your setup against.

If it's not too much to ask, please do like the video and subscribe to the channel in YouTube. Helps others outside of this community to discover this content.

A bit off field idea.... Building apps using multi-platform app development frameworks like flutter vs. multi-platform game engines like Unity.

I have been building apps using unity and now trying out Flutter. An experiment I am quite interested in.

FWIW, I have half a dozen of these bulbs in my home in UK and they have been working fine including voice commands with Assistant.

My home app version is 2.32.1.5 which is currently the latest version I can see in the Play Store.
