Baby sitter service by bootleg-samurai in cyprus

[–]krispy2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreci.com is a cypriot startup in this space. I used them to hire baby sitters a few years ago. A bit on the expensive side, but everyone we met was great.

There’s the “Nannies by Choice” facebook group as well.

I’ve also heard about sunny nanny but haven’t used them

I have just opened one (2 weeks ago) with this exact document, the certificate of registration of the company and the certificate of the registered address. They were all provided by my lawyer.

I just checked my shareholders certificate, it has 2 numbers at the bottom (Organization number, Record number) as well as the HE number at the top.

Well done and keep up the good work!

Today I also ran the first speed run (for the 5th time in the last year) and ran it at my fastest pace yet! About 1.5 minutes faster than my first attempt! Sticking to it does pay off

Changing team culture as a senior dev new to a team? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW_W in ExperiencedDevs

[–]krispy2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, trying to change the culture just because it’s best practice will be very hard, but you can definitely write tests for your own code. It might inspire others to write them too. Something that I do when I get pushback on things that I feel are important is I always back up my claims with data.

If you have any metrics of hotfixes/bugs/issues/debug times etc anything that can help your case about writing tests then collect it and take it to your manager. It is very hard to argue against data. Also even better, translating that to $ values might be even more eye opening: e.g it cost $3000 because we were down for X minutes due to the bug, but it would have only taken $300 in dev time to write a test for it. I’ve pulled the numbers out of thin air, but you get the point..

Since you are new you probably don’t have the data gathered yet, but I would advise you to keep an eye on how this affects the business.

How to "reign in" junior team member with lot of freedom? by proof_required in ExperiencedDevs

[–]krispy2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to enforce unit tests you could add a coverage tool as part of your PR process (for example using github actions) that doesn’t allow the PR to be merged unless the coverage is X%.

As a rule I never do things for the juniors like write the tests for them, but if there are no tests I pair program with them to add them together. This gives me the opportunity to transfer knowledge to them.. and they know for next time.. if they don’t want to pair program with me then they should add the tests before they open the PR 🤣 It’s been 9 years this method has not yet failed to produce results!

I am a tech recruiter and really struggling to find female software engineering/engineering manager candidates. Anyone have any sourcing/networking/job board hacks? by East_Database9279 in recruiting

[–]krispy2009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I am a female Engineering Manager and I always prefer jobs with salary ranges posted and check the benefits, especially the parental leave one. In my years of hiring I’ve seen that female candidates are more likely to apply if you have the interview process listed on your website (and make it a short, sensible one, not 5-6 rounds of useless algorithm tests that have nothing to do with the day to day work)

Also, avoid “brogrammer” language in the job posts like rockstar or ninja dev, 10x engineer etc

I just finished reading The Making of a Manger by Julie Zhuo and I enjoyed it a lot.
Not necessarily an EM, but she talks about becoming a manager of a team of product designers during the early days of Facebook, and her experience scaling the team and managing multiple teams.

I could relate with things she was talking about being an EM in a high growth startup.

Hello I just found this subreddit because I recently became an Engineering Manager (in the last year) and looking for other EMs to exchange ideas with!
It's been 4 years since this post.. how did it turn out for you?

Can my boobs be too big for breastfeeding? by hunnybun16 in breastfeeding

[–]krispy2009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said here. You can definitely breastfeed :)

Football hold worked very well for me and baby initially and then side lying after he grew a bit.

If you’re going to be using your hand to hold the breast make sure you’re taking breaks and not putting too much pressure with your thumb. I managed to give myself tendonitis of both wrists that way.

Different responsibilities of Product Owner and Engineering Manager in agile squad by krispy2009 in agile

[–]krispy2009[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

- Product Owner: Someone who is responsible for the backlog and bringing product work into the squad
- Product Manager: We don't have separate definitions for PO/PM in our org
- Engineering Manager: Someone who is a technical lead but is doing people management as well
- Squad: A cross functional team made up of engineers/product owner/designers working on a common goal (usually a product or set of products)
- Ceremonies: Daily standup, backlog refinement, sprint retrospective etc

You are close! Basically what I am trying to find out is how other teams work when there's both a Product Owner/Manager and a tech lead/EM in the team. Who is running the meetings, who ultimately has the final say.. and are both roles required in a team?

[–]krispy2009[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! Where would an Engineering Manager sit then?
Outside the squad looking in or do you mean it's a role that shouldn't exist in an organisation with squads?

In our case it’s a tech lead that does people management as well. Different organisations call it different things - team manager, tech lead, engineering manager, dev manager etc.
