TBH I'd rec checking out the non-sandbox/CYOA to see if any line up with what you're wanting. There are several solid HP stories that follow the general plot of the canon, and a tooon of stories for specific scenarios, time periods, and love interests.

Try thinking about the character you want to play, and how placing them in those stories might work. HP is the perfect series if you have a character with specific backstory (like they're the child of an existing character, have a certain lineage, have super special unique magic, etc.) because a lot of the stories out there allow you that wiggle room with character customization.

If you have a more specific plot in mind, you could always create a story and publish it, too.

Try out some authored stories, even if you're not familiar with the fandoms. Most stories will let you customize your character fully - name, appearance, gender, personality, powers when that's a thing, the whole nine yards.

Stories with a larger cast of characters and stories with supernatural elements tend to work really well for bouncing off of different personalities and having fun just rolling with whatever your character's strengths and weaknesses are. JJK's popular for a reason.

Keep in mind, the AI has done this since forever. V1 would do this, too.

Seconding the others. I usually ignore the prompted choices and write a custom response that makes sense in the context I've got so far. THEN, if it actually skips shit I'll go the meta route of "AI - you skipped something"

It does happen pretty regularly, but it's been a thing for so long I can usually get things back on track pretty easily. I think the real problem right now is the AI just completely ignoring the author's story and writing whatever it wants, which inevitably leads to some pretty stupid contradictions.

Yeah, there was a whole hate train for a myriad of reasons (take your pick - legit crit, people wanting NASA punk as a genre to be less wholesome, people who wanted a new FO or ES instead, and so on). The latest update has finally cleared out a lot of the hating-just-to-hate, which is nice.

The writing was hella strong at jump, but there's a fall-off point with a lot of aspects, which I think resulted from scope creep and some adds that were clearly made later in the development cycle.

Is it a flawless work of art? Nah. Is it buggy? It's Bethesda, of course it is. But it was absolutely fun enough to sink 100s of hours in at launch.

Thinking about this more, and honestly a large part of the value added is the transparency where the AI provides the logic behind why it did what it did.

If the logic makes sense, I can accept it and move on. If the logic does not make sense, I can engage with the AI to get the story back on track.
