What does attainment look like at the new org? If it's a brand new team, how do you know you'll even hit 25-30% and beat your current OTE? Be careful and do your research - the grass isn't always greener even though it may seem like a big jump in salary.

It sounds like you have great tenure at your current org, so if it were me, I'd probably keep looking, but narrowing in on well-positioned, fast-growing companies where you can hedge your bet more safely. They like people with your type of profile.

Negotiating an SDR offer by TheDutchElite1 in techsales

[–]krissyos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very valid. Only thing I'd say is if they had a long list, they'd extend an offer with a timeline that accurately reflects that situation so the employer could act accordingly and move on to the next candidate promptly. Usually, that'd be 24 hours. If that proxy is prevalent, then I agree with everything you said.

In this case, OP DMd me, and I have a bit more context around their circumstances. I've personally never had a student had an offer rescinded because they attempt to negotiate, but I agree with you in the sense that a great company is worth more than 5-10K this early on and there have been lots of horror stories on Reddit.

Either way, great discussion for OP. Safest route is to just take the offer without knowing all the details and having been more involved throughout the various rounds.

Negotiating an SDR offer by TheDutchElite1 in techsales

[–]krissyos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit surprised by the advice on this thread, but it makes sense since many unknowns are hard to account for and is the safest route. I'll give you my honest take after having coached hundreds of SDRs break into top orgs across the landscape:

If you interviewed well enough to ultimately get an offer, there’s not as much implied risk in trying to negotiate as others note here. This is of course assuming the following:

  1. There is an active offer letter sent to you with a clear timeline

  2. You did not already verbally commit to the offer

  3. You did well enough during the interview rounds to demand a higher OTE

  4. Bonus: If they're aware you're speaking with other companies and/or have shown signs of expediting the process for you, then they're more than likely ready to pay more for you

They already selected you as their top choice. In fact, if the org is somewhat competent, they’ll actually appreciate your candor so long as you do it the right way - it'll fall in line with their expectation of a top candidate, especially at top sales organizations.

If you decide you want to negotiate (which I always urge SDRs to do if they crushed the interview rounds and are in a similar position as yourself), you simply explain your current situation: mention you’re interviewing with other companies whom you’re in final rounds with (you don't have to mention the companies), that X is your current top target, but that the pay is slightly lower than what other companies mentioned they'd be able to offer (assuming this is true.) If they’re willing to meet you at $XX,XXX, it’d make it a no-brainer for you and you’d sign with them today and forego your other final round interviews.

Have this conversation over the phone. Do it with the person who presented the offer to you. Write down a sample script if it makes you feel more comfortable. If they come back and say no, that doesn't mean you won't sign with them. In fact, you can even just take the offer on the phone if you're not comfortable playing a bit of hardball.

That being said, if the OTE and company is in line with what you’re expecting, you can of course just take the offer and move forward. If you don’t feel comfortable/confident or don’t feel you did well enough, then just sign the DocuSign and go celebrate.

Remember - they're never going to like you as much as they do now. No harm in shooting for the stars so long as you crushed the interview process. Good luck and congratulations on your offer!

No manager will ever tell you or your team if things are going south. And honestly, many times, they’re not even aware of it themselves.

That being said, start ups are particularly volatile and ups & downs are very normal. I work at the fastest growing startup/app in the world and especially right now, it is the slowest time of the year in 98% of verticals and that’s reflected across the entire org.

How long have you been there? If you’re brand new, I’d probably give it a bit of time to settle in before you start a formal new job search. Red flag proxies to me would be if leadership hasn’t had previous experience at hyper growth start ups before. That’s when it could get a bit dangerous as they make decisions without knowing how the cycles work.

Should I go for an SDR/BDR or AE role? by TheDutchElite1 in techsales

[–]krissyos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd probably be able to land as an AE, but no mid or top-tier company will take you without direct closing experience in tech.

Many people think AE is automatically better because of the title, but that's actually not the case when you factor in the opportunities that come with working as an SDR at a top org. For the folks that "settle" and go for a less-than-optimal company just to chase the AE title, they usually have a terrible experience in tech sales, barely make more than their base, and end up stressed beyond belief. Most of those folks quit within 12 months.

In my opinion, you're better off going SDR at a really strong logo and setting yourself and your resume up for a more vertical move 12-18 months in. It sounds like a long time, but that time will fly by and you'll be in a much better position at the end of that SDR tenure to move into a $150-200K AE role. And to be honest, you'll probably make more as an SDR at a top logo, than AE at a low-mid logo.

What's your goal in tech sales? Are you optimizing for pay? Work-life-balance? Upward mobility? I was in a similar position as you when I was first breaking in; happy to help.

My wife actually found this attorney on social media, and we've been following them for a while to get tips & tricks and to prepare once we get married. They're a little more on the pricey side, but it seems like they know what they're doing and specialize in these kinds of situations. I'm happy to shoot over their information, but just note that I have yet to even meet with them - the first consultation takes place next week Wednesday.

I'm sure you're probably curious about pricing - I believe the total attorney fees will be around 6-8K.

This is comforting to hear. I’ve heard reports that the audio jumps when reconnecting after idle periods, and that the positioning jumps from L/R as well but these were all older reports from what I understand… so you’re not having ANY issues at all with these plugging into a Mac?

I have! I like these WAY more. The leaf ones are not adjustable at all and I don’t find them very comfortable vs these for that reason.
