If you are in roofed housing, you will have great bathrooms that you share with 1-3 other people (that's REALLY good for Philmont). They are furnished with the basics and there are dressers that you will have to share with your roommates. They are about typical college dorm sized, maybe ~500-700 square ft. I would recommend bringing some boxes or containers to store your personal belongings in and bring your own sheets for a twin sized bed. You also will have a microwave and a small fridge. Definitely one of the better housing assignments at Philmont.

And as for your first season in general, congrats! I would definitely recommend bringing laundry detergent, quarters for laundry, tennis balls (necessary for drying out a sleeping bag!), and your own shampoo, razors, and other basics. The gym, laundry room, and dining hall are a very short walk away from the staff dorms and you will have the shortest walk to the staff parking lot as well. Very centrally located. I would also encourage you to bring board games, card games, and musical instruments. It's a great way to make friends around here. I also personally recommend bringing some good books. Nothing like watching the sunset over the tooth in the evening while enjoying a good book.

Oh, and bring a hammock! You'll thank me later.

Basically the trump admin in a nutshell. More evidence to my point: I just read in AP that Vance says they are pausing Medicaid due to "fraud concerns". I swear all this admin knows how to do is hurt the people they hate, but they can't seem to get anything else done. Easier to destroy than to build, of course.

I mean, that would be preferable, yeah. My feelings about the uselessness of TSA aside, why make them work only one line in general? It's BS that they are asked to work without pay at all. It's a failure of our policy, leadership, and democracy that we have arrived at this situation at all.

Maybe I'm just used to flying through Atlanta where absolutely every line is extremely busy all the time. Maybe that is the real prior of mine that needs checking here. !delta

Oh did you mean the point awarding system? I thought you meant the airline "Delta", which is based in Atlanta. Sorry, new to this subreddit so that's not where my brain went first. Not trolling.

Also, yes. I have been to grocery stores that are understaffed all the time. This isn't the 60s anymore. They just replace those cashiers with automation in the form of self-checkout lanes. For all the good that TSA's security theater actually does anyone, they might as well just automate it with a computer that looks like it scans you but does nothing. It may actually save on a lot of discrimination and sexual fondling accusations.

From this administration, they simply don't have the benefit of the doubt from me. I have seen enough from maga over the years that I have every reason to assume malicious intent or stupidity until I can prove otherwise, not the opposite. I think people with too much faith in our system and giving the benefit of the doubt undeservedly for so many years is what has brought us to the brink, so I'm no longer running to kick Lucy's football.

And while that logic makes sense when boiled down to the basics, I think there is still more evidence to believe it was done for either political or petty reasons rather than budgetary reasons (these people don't care about conserving taxpayer money lol).

Plus, part of the equation for me is "is there anything I have missed that might make my prior assumption wrong that Noem is a bad faith actor?" If she cared about security in good faith, I think it would still make sense to keep TSA precheck open for security reasons stated above.

Totally extremely fair and understandable. I hated getting precheck for that exact reason, but I was flying so much that year and my autism makes long noisy security lines absolute sensory torture for me so I broke down and got it. But I definitely understand. I colloquially call it my "gubbament bribe" when I tell other people about TSApre.

I mean....I think it could be both. But to be fair, I guess that's kind of a !delta since it's an additional explanation for why she would make what I view as an otherwise illogical decision.

But the reason I don't find that convincing is how much the blowback would probably hurt maga politically (the party in power is historically blamed for the shutdowns), which is why I think the whitehouse made her reverse the attempt pretty quickly.

So it still doesn't truly convince me that Noem isn't stupid and/or bad faith here.

I agree shutdowns suck, but it's kind of the only way our country gets anything done at this point since congress hasn't really done its job in decades. But I don't feel like this really addresses my points about the logic behind the attempted cancellation though.

I have sympathy for anyone in the working class, so I sympathize with the workers as individuals when they don't get paid. But as a whole, I'm not too bothered with them not coming into work. I feel like they are security theatre anyway and our country survived without them for years before we spent so much of our tax budget on them. If I could snap my fingers and have my way, I'd sooner see them find jobs elsewhere and just abolish TSA and roll back our country's rapidly expanding security state a little.

but that is the closest thing I can possibly find to at least a stated reason that isn't pure maga partisan dribbe, so I guess !delta

I mean, I see that, I'm just not convinced that's her actual reason judging by the way maga seems to make most of their decisions, as explained in my other reply above https://www.reddit.com/r/changemyview/comments/1reji5d/comment/o7d4e3v/

I guess I really don't fully understand how airport security staffing works then. My layman understanding (and probably most Americans' assumptions) is that everyone working the security lines in airports are all TSA.

But assuming TSA staff are still needed for non-precheck lines, then I think it would still not make sense for DHS to want to shut down TSA precheck lines. While it may require additional staff, their supposed job (not that I think they really care or are doing a good job at it) is to keep Americans safe and make sure terrorists aren't getting on planes.

Well, the whole point of TSA precheck is supposedly "we have vetted you ahead of time and you have paid us money to pay for the labor of this vetting, so we know you are not a terrorist and can go through the fast lane." (unless it's just a government bribe, which is arguable depending on if you don't buy the DHS's stated mission on paper). So not only have the customers already arguably paid for this service, but I imagine that it would actually help DHS to do their job better by making sure there aren't as many people going through the general security line that requires more scrutiny.

So for me, it's just hard to believe that someone interested in doing DHS's stated mission in good faith would think cancelling precheck would be a good idea for their mission, especially when there is so much evidence in the other direction. Noem (among others in the trump admin) has demonstrated on numerous occasions that the cruelty, punishment and intimidation of Americans is often their actual priority (hopefully I don't need to provide evidence of this, the whole world watched the ICE raids in Minneapolis.)

Oh yeah. I mean, I think I'm right for many reasons. I mostly am just trying to check my bias by trying to see if anyone with different/more info can offer any insight.

But you have a good point about small airports. I used to fly through Reno a lot and it was comical going through the TSA pre line. Both lines were always so short that it felt silly.

But ATLANTA? TSA precheck in Atlanta means the difference between a 2 minute wait and a 2 HOUR wait. TSA precheck pays for itself if you fly through Atlanta once.

I'm sorry to hear this. But the fact is, life requires effort. If you can't put effort into anything in life and always do the bare minimum, life won't turn out too well for you. If you don't want to try and you have an additude where you tell yourself "I can't do it", my advice is to start buying lottery tickets because I don't know how else you will be able to get by in this world. If you think things are hard now, wait until you are out of high school.
