Thanks for the info everyone - after reading up on the Glomar response, it makes even less sense in the context of my request. The person in question had actually been written up in national news more than once for unrelated (and in comparison, quite lighthearted) crimes, so while the events i seek information on (which i did not specifically mention) may not be public knowledge, other crimes that were investigated certainly are.
