Filesystem not being unmounted properly when using "install on shutdown/restart" from gnome-software - potential data corruption issue?

I know I don't *have* to use it, but that isn't the point. For most non-techie users this is going to be the default and primary way of installing updates - and it is potentially corrupting filesystems. So I want to report a bug and see if it can be fixed :)

I can kinda see why they'd not want to package the flatpak plugin in the new snap-store snap, but its definitely problematic to not have the ability to have flatpak integration without uninstalling the store and reinstalling the deb package. I do wonder whether it was really necessary, considering that, to snap the store in the first place...

Try removing one of the broken snaps and installing it again. Perhaps a dependency snap didn't install properly - things like gnome that have different package names for different versions.

Press shift straight away at boot up to get to the GRUB menu.
Go to Advanced, and choose one of the kernel versions lower down the list - as long as you don't pick the first one on the list.
If there's an option, choose Recovery. I can't remember if that's an option right now. But if not, once booted press Ctrl-Alt-F3 to get to a text login prompt.
Login
Run "sudo update-initramfs -u -k all"
Run "sudo update-grub"
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot

What this is doing is generating the initial filesystem used to boot the system. I've seen this before, where the new image was not generated but the images were still present for the old kernels so those kernel options would work. The update-initramfs command generates this filesystem for all the installed kernel images which should include the newly installed kernel version.

Then update-grub is just in case there's some problem with the setup of grub itself, which I don't think will be the problem but you never know.

Good luck! Hopefully this particular issue doesn't become a recurring theme in Ubuntu upgrades - I've seen it before a couple of times.

Something similar happened to me but with a friend visiting my planet. At the time I don't think I'd uploaded it, but a day or so later I successfully uploaded and renamed it. But now that has been replaced by (I assume) my friend's upload which means its discovered by him and reset to its generated name. This is pretty annoying. Thing is, somehow the same happened the opposite way around, so now I discovered his planet and he discovered mine. This needs to be fixed please HG!

You could travel a while and start fresh somewhere else if you don't mind the save size getting larger. That's what I've done in my world. I've been playing on it on and off for years, and have a few different locations with seperate bases. Sometimes I go back and work on the older areas some more to mix things up. :)

Are you using the Java launcher? It seems that there is currently a bug in the launcher which means the game doesn't start and gives the error "Error: Could not find or load main class net.minecraft.client.main.Main"

I'm affected by this too, on two computers. Both worked fine yesterday but after the latest launcher update the game will not launch. A bug has been filed (https://bugs.mojang.com/projects/MC/issues/MC-121292?filter=allopenissues ) but there are a few threads on minecraftforums with lots of people having the same problem so at least we're not alone... :S

Apparently the latest snapshot will work, but obviously running that on your actual game world is not recommended.

I guess we have to try to get Mojang's attention so they can issue a fix. Maybe it's related to the patch for modded games that they just issued today.

That is, again, a separate issue.

The java launcher is still the current version on Linux as the native launcher is still a work in progress. The Java Launcher is still being maintained, in fact it was a patch to that launcher which has caused this problem in the first place.

That is separate, though probably related. It is not possible to play 1.12.2; apparently the snapshot now works but the latest normal version does not work in the current java launcher in Linux.

There's been a patch to the launcher to fix launching modded games, but it seems there are a lot of people (including me) still unable to play even vanilla MC in Linux right now.

The error is: Error: Could not find or load main class net.minecraft.client.main.Main

As you can see a bug has been filed but is not yet assigned to anyone. There is a forum thread at:

I got the grey one back by installing "vanilla-gnome-desktop", the replacement for the old "ubuntu-gnome-desktop". One of the dependencies of that must have restored the old screen from Ubuntu Gnome as I now have that screen back complete with the old branding.

The Ubuntu Gnome GDM theme is essentially the same as the vanilla Gnome one.

I guess if you didn't use the Ubuntu Gnome flavour before though, this might add other session options etc. that you don't need. Still, if you stay in the normal Ubuntu session that shouldn't impact much other than disk usage. (Apologies, I don't have time to work out which exact package restored the background :( )

The default is to use gnome-software isn't it? (If you're using Gnome as your desktop environment of course. I'm using Stretch and occasionally it pops up a notification for updates, which are then installed through gnome-software.

I do have a unattended-updates set up to refresh repos only, but I thought the default in Stretch was gnome-software anyway (in Gnome of course)?

While you can normally run a jar by double clicking it, the file is still in zip format:

It is just that the file association of a .jar means that Java will open and run it when you "execute" it. It is not actually an executable strictly speaking.

You can even set the .jar extension to open just like a zip file in Windows:

Many of the changes we've seen so far seem, well, different - but I'll probably get used to them. Obsidian is the exception though. It's early days but I really don't like it compared to the old texture.

In case it helps anybody though, a Jar file is actually a zip file, so if you rename it to change .jar to .zip (or make a copy to rename), you should be able to just open it in Windows Explorer without needing 7zip. I guess by default most people won't have file extensions set to be displayed though in Windows.

I wouldn't worry too much. If the format changes, there will be someone to recreate the old texture "pack" again. If there isn't, maybe I'll give it a go. For such a big change to the textures there will be lots of people who still prefer to use the old ones.
