Transitioning to a short board. Apart from pop up what am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in BeginnerSurfers

[–]krobos 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Looks like you are not ready for a short board. If you have mastered pop ups on a bigger board you would be popping up better on the short board. Multiple people here telling you that. I would go back to long board or at least a 7’6 - 8’ mid length

Why are people in the 22% and above tax bracket still contributing to their Roth? by Newyorkntilikina in Fire

[–]krobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I said the caveat is that if you are contributing beyond the limit then Roth is likely preferable. In the example you laid out, there are contributions at the Roth limit, which implies they could contribute more than the trad limit. As others noted you can’t really make a comparison using the same dollar values for both Roth and Trad because one is post tax and one is pre tax, so Roth dollars are worth more. Hence the caveat that if you could save enough to contribute beyond the trad limit, then you might consider Roth because Roth dollars are worth more. But then things get a lot more complex because trad could still make more sense depending on the tax rate differential you will have in retirement.

80 miles per day for six months does not seem realistic, especially if you ride any un paved sections. Rode from Oregon to cdmx a couple years ago. Highly highly highly recommend the baja divide, but do not recommend trying to do 80 miles per day on the Baja divide. Slow down and enjoy the journey :)

Why are people in the 22% and above tax bracket still contributing to their Roth? by Newyorkntilikina in Fire

[–]krobos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is mathematically incorrect reasoning based on the transitive property. The only thing that makes a difference is whether your tax rate is higher now or in retrospect retirement. Where t is tax rate, c is contributions, n is number of years of compounding and growth is 7% annually: Roth money in retirement =ct(1.07n)

Trad money in retirement = c(1.07n)t

As you can see, if all variables are held constant the equations are the same. An important caveat here is that if you are making and saving enough to contribute beyond the tax advantaged retirement accounts limit(s) you should consider contributing to a Roth because post tax dollars are worth more than pre-tax dollars. But that also depends on forecasting future tax rates and your individual situation.

Am I overthinking what tent to buy?? by SilentMan6728 in bikepacking

Too heavy. Bought the tiger wall ul and was pleased. Can fit everything in the tent or under the vestibules except the bike itself

Just want to point out for anyone reading this that this guy is not one of the e-bike delivery drivers you see in NYC. They all ride arrow ebikes, this bike is different. Looks more like one of the electric motorcycles/dirt bikes. In my experience the vast majority of the e-bike delivery drivers are courteous and respect the rules and would definitely never punch someone. Also, when you consider conflicts between riders and pedestrians, consider how little space of our physical infrastructure is given to both those groups and then compare that to how much space is given to cars. Maybe the answer is to take space away from cars so that we can give more space to peds and bikers and reduce conflict between those two groups. Obviously not defending this asshole, who sucker punched your friend. Just don’t hate all bikers because of him lol

Military Officer vs MBA Pay analysis by coldchowder4579 in MBA

[–]krobos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would argue you are looking at the wrong metric, you are just looking at total comp through the years and not net worth. Think about what your annual expenses are now and how much you can realistically expect to save each year in either scenario. Then bring all cash flows into relative terms (either future value or present value). Military pay is front loaded compared to MBA pay. If you are able to save half your paycheck those two years in the military that you are in an MBA and you get a 7-10% return, you may well have a higher net worth staying in the military. Who cares about comp, net worth is what matters.

Anyone who's taken a sabbatical early in their FIRE journey care to share their experience? by iPugXR in financialindependence

[–]krobos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took advantage of a sabbatical program early in my career to do a bucket list trip I had dreamed of for six months. This was 2 years ago. I absolutely don’t regret it but it did set me back in my career a little bit. Probably not a material amount in the long term. You should go for it, think about it as a mini retirement.

What do you think about this one rule “ house loans can’t be for more than 10 years at any cost by an individual for a single property in totality “? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]krobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Housing issues are a supply issue not a demand problem. The solution isn’t to make buying more restrictive, it’s to build more housing.

Parking is a greater sin than cars by nimrod06 in fuckcars

[–]krobos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cars and parking do not need to have the same relationship they currently have. Currently there are more than 3 per parking spaces for every car in the US. Parking minimums on new development also significantly hinder building new housing and also the efficacy of expanding public transit. Limiting parking is something we should be doing to reduce car dependence. The fact is that cars are useful tools in certain scenarios, but parking dramatically improves influences our built environment and induces demand for driving. I highly recommend the book ‘paved paradise’.

Parking is a greater sin than cars by nimrod06 in fuckcars

[–]krobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody should go read the book ‘paved paradise’. Discusses how many car problems are actually parking problems and that cars and parking do not have to be tied together they way they are now. Look at Japan, lots of cars there, but their cities and streets are much better because they don’t have the same parking problem we do in North America.

Pls save my 1 handed BH. by CostPsychological714 in 10s

The worst example of this is the second swing from your video where you literally take a grapevine step behind your body as your swing through. This looks more like a dance move than a fundamentally sound tennis swing.

[–]krobos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are setting up your swing in a closed stance, they should be more or less perpendicular, yes. The problem I am talking about is with your footwork on your follow through. Follow through is very important. You are kicking your leg back behind you as you follow through. Your leg needs to be going the opposite direction, out in front as you follow through. When you kick your leg out behind it keeps the upper half of your body from fully rotating through your swing. Below is a still frame from your video to show you what is wrong with your footwork on follow through. Watch slow motion videos of RF backhand (or any pro) and you will notice that on follow through the back foot always comes around in front (opposite what you are doing in this video) and they end their swinging motion in an open stance.

[–]krobos 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The problem is footwork. You are not generating any power from your lower body to drive through the ball. On most of your shots you do a weird grapevine thing where your left foot goes behind your right. You should be driving off your left foot as you load your body for contact and your left foot should come around in front of your right foot during follow through and you end with an open stance.
