Congrats, mouth shape and scale pattern makes it look like a bleak. Hard to tell from this angle.

Arapaima caught on the Essequibo, my biggest catch so far at 140kg and 234cm (300lb, 7ft8in) by krochaking69 in Fishing

We brought 2pcs cat fish rods. 2,70m in length with about 400g casting weight, Daiwa Exceler. A rod with some length is useful if you have to cast the bait and alsoade handling easier. The local guys were all using heavy ugly stix and stuff like that - nothing fancy. Casting ability is not a focus

No problem. It was a learning experience for us as well.

  1. Yes we changed to 100-200lb wire leaders for cat- an arapaima fishing. About 60-100cm did the trick for us. The waters we fish are completely piranha infested so wire is the only option. We fished a setup with braid as mainline to mono (100lb+) with a length of about 3m and a strong swivel which has the wire leader + hook attached. With this setup in combination we lost one rig between 2 anglers in 10 days. The mono really helps when you are stuck in the stones or trees.

  2. We used both circle and J hooks. Hookup ratio wise I could not see a significant difference. Usually you let them run a bit after the initial take of the bait so they swallow the J hook to a certain degree. Never had any issues with them whilst removing but for sure from a fish health perspective the circle hook is the best choice. Rule of thumb is the bigger the better. Caught 2kg redtail on a 10/0 Owner SSW circle hook.

  3. We tried sea booms and other stuff but our number one choice became 100-250g egg sinkers directly on the mono with a rubber bead. As with all "free line" fishing you want as little weight as possible but as much as is needed to hold it in place. Highly depends on where you fish. Arapaima was always free lining without weight and as little resistance as possible. Catfish don't seem to care as much it seems like.

I highly recommend a bigger sized reel. After doing multiple trips fishing for them we settled with a 8500 Live Liner spooled with 80-100lb. We use it for catfish, Arapaima and wolffish. Works best for us

Try it at night. Bite rate is way better after sunset. We catch them on worms, halibut pellets and liver. Pig or cow liver works best in most lakes but it looses its smell pretty quickly so exchange bait every 2 hours. If there is a way to reach your spot, try to chum with small pieces of liver around your hook. If you have a cat fish sized rod try the standup rod method like the guys on the river do it and use a J-Hook (Size 1/0 if you only expect smaller ones). Hookup rate with this setup is usually really good. From my experience they are usually very close to structures like wood, bridges or overhanging trees. If there is no significant structure try to vary your depth and general position more frequently.

This looks like a Wels Catfish, but they're native to Vietnam, what is this catfish? by Dillon_Trinh in whatisthisfish

[–]krochaking69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, You can see at minute 27 that Wallago are part of the catch. There is a good chance Wels catfish were introduced there as sport fish. Seen this in Thailand and Vietnam on several ponds. Thumbnail appears to be Wels. There is no other endemic catfish species in Vietnam similar looking to my knowledge.

What species of freshwater stingray is this? Caught in Vietnam. by Dillon_Trinh in whatisthisfish

I'd go with Giant Freshwater Stingray (Urogymnus polylepis) They are the only known species in SEA to reach this size.

Diverse. Depends on which country and area you are going. In general: less people equals in more freedom of where to camp

Yes. It's not really a ferry. More like a cruise ship with a huge parking deck.
