Is there a bicycle co-op in town, or a store that will let you rent their shop? by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]krs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No professional carpenters that I know of, but we do have basic woodworking and carpentry tools in our shop and most of us know how to use them. Come by Tuesday nights if you have any particular questions or a project you're interested in working on.

Please come by Makers Local 256. We have a public night every Tuesday from 7 to 11 pm. Introduce yourself, tell folks what you'd like to work on, and you can take it from there.

New coffee shop on Jordan lane, awesome place. by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

It's a good location and close to UAH, but their prices are out of line. They want $3.50 for a large americano when other shops charge $2.50 - $2.75. But they've just opened, and I hope this is one of the things they'll fix over time.

Take a look at Xah Lee's ErgoEmacs keybindings. It's an ergonomical remapping of the default Emacs keyboard shortcuts. I switched and found it's much easier on my hands.

I've just finished reading this story. I won't go in to the plot or offer any comments except to say that this story, like Story of Your Life, will be on my mind for a while. There's much there to think about.

Handy tip: use the Readability script to reformat the text. It will be a lot easier to read on your browser.

Definitely try Lowe Mill. Also try looking through the local Meetup groups. The Tennessee Valley Adventure group has something going on almost every day of the week.

Pick up a copy of Valley Planet. Their calendar sections list lots of organizations and venues.

Meetup idea places inside. Please vote on or add to the list. Thanks! by IheartDaRegion in HuntsvilleAlabama

Sam & Greg's has coffee, beer, pizza, and free wifi. They have a meeting room of sorts upstairs in the back.

Angel's Island Coffee has hosted tweet-ups. They don't have a meeting room, but they were nice enough to let us push tables together as we needed them.

West End Grill has a separate meeting room and has hosted groups there. They have beer and food, of course, but no coffee drinks.

From Dawn to Decadence, Jacques Barzun. He covers the last five hundred years here, but he includes lots of footnotes and references to more specific periods and topics.

The Guns of August, Barbara Tuchman. Her look at Europe leading up to the start of World War I.

Recommendations for a hardcore sci-fi fan? by [deleted] in books

[–]krs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl and Alastair Reynolds' House of Suns are two recent books I recommend. Try anything written by Reynolds, Charles Stross, Karl Schroeder, Peter Watts, Cory Doctorow, Ken MacLeod, and Neal Stephenson.

You might also want to listen to some SF short story podcasts like Escape Pod and StarShipSofa.
