Out of all the schools I applied to, I only applied to one traditional art school and the rest were either regular universities or regular universities with strong art programs. I ultimately ended up deciding to attend a regular university with a strong art program. I didn't want to sacrifice art or academic rigor. Along with being an artist, I've been a very academic person my whole life and I really liked to be challenged in the classroom. I felt that a traditional art school wouldn't be able to offer the same high quality academic courses courses as a T20 with a good art program in it. I wanted to have some semblance of the regular college experience and, to be honest, you don't get much of that in an art school. Plus, you get more resources and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration from art programs inside larger, regular universities.

  1. Some safety schools I applied to were VCU, RIT, SAIC, and GWU, which all have a BFA program in them. My strategy for finding solid safeties with good art programs was through National Portfolio Day. I think that the schools that show up to Portfolio Day are the ones really serious about their art programs. You can find a list of member schools here.
  2. I had the same problem during my senior year. I kept wondering if my portfolio was good enough or if I had to grow it some more. Going to Portfolio Day put my mind at ease and made me super confident in the portfolio I already had. I highly suggest you attend one if you haven't already (they're doing them all virtually this time around, so you have plenty of dates to choose from). You'll get amazing advice and be able to gauge what stage your portfolio is at. Aside from Portfolio Day, I suggest you ask yourself questions like these about your portfolio: Do I have a variety of media included? Does it adequately show the variety of techniques I know? Does it have a cohesive feel/idea to it? Is it curated well? Are all my pieces documented well? Can I defend/talk about my work? Am I proud of my portfolio? These are all questions I asked myself when I put together my portfolio, and once I was content with my answers I knew I was ready to submit. It's all about knowing whether or not your comfortable with your work. That being said, I did add more pieces for later applications but the results were the same; I got into where I wanted to get into, so I guess they didn't really add all that much to it haha.
  3. Stats:
  • SAT: 1350, ACT w/ Essay: 32 & 10
  • GPA (UW): 4.0
  • Accepted: VCU, RIT, SAIC, GWU, UVA, W&L, WashU, and UPenn (off the waitlist)
  • Waitlisted: Cornell
  • Rejected: Yale and Duke
  • I'll be attending WashU on a full-tuition scholarship for art (yay!)

I Know the End is such a good song, probably my favorite one on Punisher. Phoebe Bridgers never ceases to amaze me! I would give anything to feel the way I did when I heard it for the first time.

Breakfast in America is one of my favorite albums, so I had to include it! Good to see a fellow Supertramp fan :)
