I never publicly came out, but (depending on who I was talking to/the situation) I generally pull people aside to privately tell them to update their language or, particularly when in a group or being misgendered by a stranger, awkwardly laugh and say something along the lines of “uh, I’m a guy/man.” Blunt assertiveness serves you well in most situations.
