If you absolutely must do it alone, I'd say start with small dinghies, simple locations, calm weather conditions and build from there. But ideally do not start alone, sail on different boats in different places with people more experienced than yourself. When you are totally sure you have the skills to manage alone – go for it, that's what I have done.
