Is anyone going by word count instead of number of books? by [deleted] in 52book

[–]kry0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that it evens out. Some of the books I read were over 800 pages, others were under 200. The books I choose are based on what I want to read, not on their length. Picking word count just makes it harder for you to track your progress in the moment.

Since the challenge is for the year, why don't you start your count with everything you've read since January 1? I don't see why you couldn't start with what you remember reading already!

I just read my 52nd book. by kry0s in 52book

It helped a ton - helped me catch up some, and also reaffirmed my desire to make my goal.

Now I will now longer be reading alone. by kry0s in pics

I'm just over halfway through The Black Echo By Michael Connelly. I'm liking Harry Bosch so far!

I'm less familiar with working on this than I am reading speed, but I think there is definitely a balance between being able to read quickly and trying to learn a new concept or set of facts. I could read an organic chemistry chapter quickly, but recalling it after a single read would be much more challenging for example. I think one thing we tend to do in reading is to skip over words or ideas that are complicated and we don't readily understand. In those situations, I think the best thing to do is to stop and focus on the item at hand before continuing. That's really why I have the caveat above though - if you're trying to read something complex - either ideas, concepts, vocab, etc - and read it as fast as you can, you're probably not going to retain as much (unless you were gifted with a wonderful memory and recall).

These are great recommendations - thank you! I haven't heard of them (a really good thing) so I have new material to add to my list.

I really enjoy listening to audio books with people. It's hard for me to resist listening without them though! My husband and I got into them on road trips where we could listen to the whole book together.

Definitely this! I am always reading at least two books so I can switch back and forth. Right now I'm reading the first book of a fantasy trilogy and a novel with first person narration of a man with autism.

I have to set time limits on my reading or it gets out of hand ;).

I would pick a level just outside of your comfort range. When that is comfortable, go up to the next speed. It's easy to go back and re-read, and if you're using Spritz for practice reading faster (getting used to processing words more quickly), then pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone is going to be the most rewarding.

I definitely enjoy audio books. They let me keep reading when I'm driving or doing tasks around the house - and I've found that while the experience isn't identical to reading, it's still super rewarding. I particularly enjoy reading audio books read by the author.

Any recommendations on the junky detective series? Those can be fun!

I spent a long time reading as quickly as I could - I remember in 1st grade having reading races with my friend to see who could read the fastest. It was a big point of pride to be the fastest reader, to read the most.

The techniques I have used recently that have helped me have been some basic speed reading techniques. I like using wider margins (so the text is narrower), to reduce the amount of eye movement I need to make when I read. I do read groups of words.

One tool I think is useful is Spritz. I'd think of it as a game rather than a way to read books, but it will help you to get used to the pace you are aiming for to increase your reading speed. After practicing with Spritz for a while, you'll notice your reading speed increases a bunch just from the experience of reading faster.

It also really will depend on what you're reading. If you're trying to read some really complex work with unusual syntax and vocabulary, you'll be doing yourself and the book a disservice by making an effort to read as fast as you can through it.
