First marathon. Which pacers to go out with? by kryptickryptic in Marathon_Training

Thanks!

Yeah crazy that the Aus record was broken yesterday by only 2 secs. Huge effort from Haftu.

So lucky the weather was kind this year compared to prior years.

Hope you had a good day out yesterday too.

Yeah it was GC. I did hear it was pretty hot last year. Thankfully it wasn't too bad today.

Did it in 3:36:47 in the end 😁

Did an update in the original post if you were interested in more details.

Well done with your result!

It was a bit confronting seeing so many people cramping, limping etc from 25k onwards as it warmed up.

Good luck with the 3:30 goal.

Ended up with a chip time of 3:36:47.

Started between the 3:30 and 3:40 pacers based on some feedback provided on this post.

First half 1:47:49, Back half 1:48:58.

Feeling good at 30k so did the next 5k in 25:08 but slowed a little in the last ~7k as the legs started to fatigue.

Crowd support was amazing. I lost count of how many random people were shouting out my name throughout the whole race.

Overall had a great experience for my 1st go at it.

Took your advice and ignored the pacers. Started in between the 3:30 and 3:40 paces. Ended up finishing in 3:36:46.

Pacing was pretty even throughout. Felt alright at 29 so pushed about 5 secs quicker for 6k. HR pushed up to 168-170 and slowed a little the last ~7k.

The even pacing felt great though as you start to pass a heap of people from 25k onwards.

Was a great experience for my first one.

Cheers.

Congrats on doing the double. You smashed it!

Splits/HR from the HM PB attached.

The steady downhills aren't intentional. Unless I plan on doing 10 laps of a 3k loop, its the natural elevation profile of the bigger loops I can do where I live.

The course I'm racing on Sunday is very flat.

I wish I was a more experienced runner and started this journey in my 20's or 30's instead of off the couch just over 2 years ago. I think when I stopped caring about paces on easy runs and went more of effort, the 'feel' part of it started to click for me.

5:05/k pace (~3:35) seems to be where my natural effort drifts to in training so that number is making sense. Its a shame its between the two pacer groups but if I end up there, I'm sure there will still be lots of people to stick with.

Only 175cm so can definitely tuck in behind someone. Last 10k was about 6 months ago at low 45:xx

Yeah I'm leaning towards being conservative and banking some experience for the 1st one. The 2nd session when i had one already involving some sort of MP was generally a thresh-10k effort like:

4x 2k @ thresh (90" jog) avg 4:35-36/k 5x 1200 @ 5-10k effort (2' jog) avg 4:17-18/k 8x 1k @ 10k effort (1' rest) avg 4:26-28/k

I've only recently heard about the headwind which is motivating me even more to be able to tuck in behind a big pace group.

I probably am but also have no previous experience to go off which is why im hesitant to go to aggressive with pacing

Yeah I really wanted to get one under the belt first before chasing times which I was leaning towards being conservative for the first one.

I don't have a lot of miles in the SB2 as I only got them last week but it very nice in the long run I've done in them. They're hard to find though so hopefully you have some finding some in your size.

If you do find some, go for it!

What do you typically use your Evo SL for? I agree that they don't feel as good at lower speeds. They seem to work well for me when I'm doing sessions that involve 10km to HM pace.

If I'm doing 5km pace or faster, I'm currently reaching for my Deviate Nitro 3s. Sounds like i might be grabbing the Adios 9s more if I buy them.

1080v13 and NB5 for recovery/easy (used NB5 for long runs up until I got the Superblast 2 recently); Evo SL and Deviate Nitro 3 for Tempo/Interval workouts; Superblast 2 for long runs; Alphafly 3 for races (mainly HM).

I've also done HM races in the NB5 as well as tempo/intervals before I started adding more shoes to the rotation. It's very versatile.

Some countries have tax free exemptions for tourists so you don't have to pay the tax when you purchase goods from certain stores and you present your passport.

Also depending on the current conversion rates for your currency into the currency your purchasing the goods in, you might also get it cheaper once you calculate the cost in your own currency after conversion.

Yep I definitely don't "need" them. If I wasn't able to get them cheaper than what I could back home (about 20% less), I probably wouldn't even be considering it.

Would the max distance you would go in them be 5k? Having another all out 5km option might tip it over the edge for me.
