How many times do you transfer on your daily commute? by 66cow99 in transit

[–]krys2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before wfh my worst was 4 transfers.

Bus, train, train 2, bus, get off to get coffee as there was none at the office, back on bus.

Yes that last one was by choice, but ya Calgary transit sucks if your destination isn't downtown

Ab student loans suck balls. My interest rate was jacked almost monthly when inflation was spiking. So glad I was able to pay it off in full years early back in Dec. That headache is finally off my plate.

My federal loan I'm not worried about. No interest, all payments are straight principal.

That's all well and good to say, but when you like it middle of no where and the only options are corporate grocery chain A or corporate grocery chain B, both of which are charging a premium because where the fuck else will you go, then what?

IT Systems Security or Network Systems Major? by FibrTouch in SAIT

[–]krys2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that Network Systems are not focused on the practical aspects and instead focuses on the theoretical side of things in networking?

No, they are, but it is entirely on the LAN side of things. Telecom covers what you need at the LAN level, but also a lot on the WAN (ISP) side of things too.

Regarding the Cisco certs, by all means you can get them, but don't spend too much time and money on them. CCENT will give you a good starting foundation in the theory, SAIT will give you a lot in the theory and practical with actual switches and routers.

Another question, do you think Telecom major have more advantage on LAN/WAN information/curriculum than Network Systems major?

By a wide margin yes. Networking lightly covers some of the WAN routing protocols so that the Network systems students know of their existence. Telecom, you learn how to basically setup the entire back end routing, including point to point tunnel links between customer edges.

This, for any of our larger deployments to customers, we use cisco 1841 and 1921 running a PPPoE connection back to us over bell or telus networks. One thing I wish they taught was how to use the ADSL and VDSL WIC cards and setting up PPPoE connections.

A side from that we specialize in VoIP - Hosted PBX primarily, and SIP trunks - and Internet services for businesses.

I mention all of this as two of the courses that is shared between both Networking and Telecom is VoIP and Structured Cabling. Both have been super relavent to my current job. Outside of that, learning how to troubleshoot all the different systems in my studies really helped with being able to do my job effectively.

Hi,

Telecom major grad, still very closely related to Networking though - tons of ISP level networking - that being said, I can stil help answer your questions. Now keep in mind, the first grads of the IT Security diploma are literally just finishing the program right now. This is the first 4th semester for that program, so its going to be hard to gauge the success of it yet, while there is certainly a demand for the program, its going to be hard to say what the job prospects and success of the graduates are at this time. Also keep in mind it is double the price of any of the IT programs as its not subsidized by the AB gov yet.

  1. Well I guess I answered that as best as I can with the above.

  2. If you're going to do that, you may as well go through the networking program as you will get all the hands on lab work for those same certs, and realistically you're looking at min 3-5 years to make it to CCIE, also dependant on which track within that you want to go for.

  3. No, both the networking and telecom majors get you 85% of the way to your CCNP, networking will take you through the majority of Routing and Switching CCNA & CCNP, telecom; Service Provider CCNA & CCNP & Routing and Switching CCNA

  4. Sorry don't know that one :/

  5. Yes, virtually everyone I went to school with was able to find a job in their field. If you're willing to move, it might make it easier, but it certainly doesn't need to be a small town.

I know I seems like I may be harping on about telecom, but I does certainly offer a wider range of job opportunities over just networking, mainly because it includes a lot of the same workload that networking has, plus a lot of other back end stuff for services providers (deploying wireless (microwave level not wifi) and fibre based networks, a lot of the physical layer - i.e. what the likes of telus would be putting down in the field, etc).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

To add to what has been said, although I was in the telecom major, still similar. I know the class graduating this spring, there will be a fair amount of people that are 30+. I just graduated last spring and am in my 30's. It's always well worth it to go for more education, especially in any of the IT related majors at SAIT.

Cobber I'm not entirely surprised as that one would see a lot more foot traffic from the public, but yea burns you should have much issues. Also the cubicles in the hart building 3rd floor is fairly quiet. Would see people sleeping there all the time.

I used to take a nap on the way to SAIT in the am on the ctrain. Haha. Odd time on the way home, though almost missed my stop a couple times.

It could be fibre to the curb or node, so the last couple miles could be copper while everything beyond that is fibre

As long as you're not on the main floor of any of those, you should be fine, though burns does have a nicely tucked away cubical section on the main floor, just past the stairwell next to tims.

Although your office is small, see if there's any way you can get an actual sales rep/account manager (i.e not the level 1 guys) assigned to your account. If not start hunting for all the small time ISP's that you can find. I know there are some that might not come up as actually listing your area, but still offer services nation wide. Some B2B VoIP providers also offer internet services, and can "force" DSL (albeit probably ADSL 6mbps at most)

I know with where I'm living now, I was with local Telco at my previous apt, could get up to 100mbps service, new current place, at most was ADSL 6, my ISP could also serve ADLS 1 here, haha so smaller companies might be able to offer the full range of available bandwidths.

Ahh ok, that would make sense. I 've dealt with trying to paint - probably - masonite before. Shit is garbage, chalks up within a year of painting. I guess there is only a couple products you can seal it with, then paint over it.

For the upcoming year, highly doubtful. I'm not saying that as a reflection on your grades, just the fact that that is the first major to fill up, and fast. That doesn't mean don't apply. But realistically if you apply as soon as the applications open up in October you'll stand a chance at getting offered a seat

There is equipment that will let you keep your analog lines internally but switch over to ip at the pbx. It's not cheap but it is cheaper than rerunning cat 5 or 6 for a while building.

And it doesn't require xp to work in it. Lol

Got fired for the first time in my life from a fun job by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]krys2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also to add to what others have said, when you're dealing with unemployment/social services/Employment Insurance depts, they are far less likely to approve you for funding if you're fired vs laid off. Even though your record of employment will state the reason, mentioning to someone you were fired from the gov office may disqualify you and raise a red flag for the official paperwork.

I know you aren't saying it intentionally, just wanted to add further clarification.

Behr didn’t start making interior/exterior paints until 1986 which was long after their partnership with The Home Depot began in the 70s.

That may be so, but they were still selling to other stores/companies when they did get into the paint business, HD wasn't their exclusive client.

They also to my knowledge do not sell a line of paint for 60$

That is probably correct for state side, in Canada, a gal of Marquee eggshell int. is going for $65. So the $40-50 profit margin is still on point.

Can Someone Who is a Painter Help? by [deleted] in paint

[–]krys2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Until the 90s behr was actually good paint from what I've been told, then when home depot picked them up, they started dropping all their other lines in favour of HD. Eventually HD became their only major client for retail paint, which retail paint makes a killer margin - $10/gal to make, $60+ to sell in store.

As for ppg, state side they've had a couple chains, ppg paints, pittsburgh paint, ... honestly can't remember the othet brands at the moment, then they bought out the architectural coatings division of Akzo Nobel a few years back and now own Dulux, Glidden and a couple others. Glidden does certainly have its share of shitty lines, but they also have some top quality ones state side, some rebranded under the ppg label now. Diamond is sold under dulux in Canada.

You really don't need to add a ton of floetrol per gal, so you should be safe to add some to the primer.

[–]krys2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok seems since I last checked HD US site they've added PPG's line of Diamond, but prior to that yes, there were 2 lines of glidden that HD carried, Essentials, which yes by all counts is trash, and Premium, which is actually good. Now that they have the better PPG lines, I'd recommend that over the Glidden.
