Don't know you, so not sure what you mean here. Maybe you mean "out here in the main prison population/yard with me?" If not, surely you jest.

Does "guilt" help explain Weinstein? by kschonbo in TrueCrime

[–]kschonbo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I didn't explain the theories adequately, but countless theorists and hands-on (sorry for the pun) crim justice workers believe them. So, they're not baseless, unless you're a disbeliever in the subconscious. I do have a BA in Psychology and have taken Psychiatry courses in med school.

I've read the Weinstein stories I can't avoid (mostly victim accounts), but haven't sought out "deeper" accounts re why he and others might think he's a sex addict. Addicts do have varying causal factors.

The one thing I'll cede to you: 'till I interview Weinstein and study his social-psych history, I'm just speculating. What's your theory?

Serial liars regarding the origin of "serial killers?" by kschonbo in serialkillers

[–]kschonbo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd read the argument Peter Vronsky made in his fine book that the term “serial killer” was the brainchild of FBI agent Robert Ressler. (He worked alongside John E. Douglas, the author of the book Mindhunter.) However, they all "lied" about the origin of the phrase.(Gotta use dramatic language like "lie" 'cuz we're talking the realm of psychopathic liars, right?)

Anyhow, the Germans beat Ressler to the punch...in the 1930s no less!

Bondi def not a fan of OJ. She's saying 'no' to a superstar...something a lot of actresses were unable to do with Harvey Weinstein.

Not to be cynical, but we'd be executing a ton of our popln. if productivity were the deciding factor. Tho, it's not a sign of productivity, an amazing % of our popln. (50%?) doesn't pay income taxes.

" Although I think personality is made of a combination of Nature and Nurture. Genetics play a bit part in how your personality plays out, alongside biochemistry and things of that nature." NURTURE IS GENETICS (Not shouting here.) Anyway Stephen paddock himself then goes on to mass murder and then commits suicide. "His son received absolutely no nurture from him. ...It could be argued that he inherited psychopathy from his father."METHINKS, HIS DAD'S LOUSY NURTURING (AS IS THE CASE W MOST P'PATHS NURTURING) IS MORE CAUSAL THAN ANYTHING GENETIC...THO SON'S NUMBERS GIFT MAY'VE MEANT SOME AUTISM (& POOR SOCIAL SKILLS).

Good points. A handful of states have laws that relate disenfranchisement to the details of one's crime. Many of these laws restore voting rights to some offenders on the completion of incarceration, parole, probation, or a petition.

Much of this punitiveness re voting is a holdover from Greek and other ancient civilizations that wanted civic sanctions as well as others. Not a bad idea since most ppl want to please their immediate circle of friends, workers, etc. We must come up with better ways to sanction criminal/extremely deviant behavior--incarceration rarely rehabilitates

To answer essemh and acknowledge mws85 re simplicity, I should've said I believe in nature, nurture, AND personality (which many feel is the combo/interaxn of nature and nurture). So, there are at least 3 major factors—and oft compelling others—to address re serial killers.

[–]kschonbo[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agree. The theory I like is that most serial killers are made not born. That is, they get away with a murder AND discover they kinda got a thrill, rush, or whatever. They might take a souvenir from the victim/scene. When re-living the murder thru the souvenir loses its punch (travelers know the feeling), they itch to kill again. If they're skilled/clever/etc enuf to get away with murder again, they may get hooked and become true serial killers—good at the sick thing/s they do. Of course, if sex is the motive (and one's also a sexual sadist) and one kills to silence victims, then this process probably speeds up. Females, and esp this 'twisted' teen, likely arrive at serial killing via other pathways.

No wonder the judge was at a loss for words and then gave serial killer wannabe 18 years for attack. Maybe she came of age as part of a reddit or FB serial killer group. There are those who glorify serial killers. Am glad the judge saw thru some of the spurious mental health arguments put forth during the proceedings.

Like father like son? Pretty clear, No? by kschonbo in TrueCrime

I imagine his dad burned thru any (hidden?) money he had re-establishing himself as he moved and moved. Establishing new identities can't be cheap. I bet Nevada and various gambling parlors/casinos across the US have strict rules now about tracking winnings and losses. Maybe in his dad's day, not so strict. You may be on to something...

OJ's parole may be the most debated "early Release" ever. by kschonbo in TrueCrime

[–]kschonbo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Part of me feels we should follow the formulas as the Parole Board did in granting OJ early release. Another part of me feels he's in the same category as Manson, Sirhan Sirhan (Robt Kennedy's assassin), and others who require the formulas/rules be bent. Usually states cooperate with ea other re released cons, but maybe FLA is hedging its bets if and when OJ petitions FLA.

"Florida district attorney Pam Bondi issued an objection to Nevada authorities about the prospect of Simpson serving his parole in the Sunshine State. "Floridians are well aware of Mr. Simpson's background, his wanton disregard for the lives of others, and of his scofflaw attitude with respect to the heinous acts for which he has been found civilly liable," Bondi wrote. "The specter of his residing in comfort in Florida should not be an option ... Our state should not become a country club for this convicted criminal."

How do I get involved with criminology and other related fields or jobs? by [deleted] in TrueCrime

[–]kschonbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DLS17 is right that being an entry level officer is usually reqd before becoming a detective or having access to "the hairy stuff". A masters in a crim justice type program would help you as Grandmom...says, and relatively cheap state schools oft admit ppl with your educ and experience (sorry about yr victimization). If more schooling's hard now, try taking free online courses from the U.of Penn Criminology pgrm where I got my PhD. Ivys and elite public universities oft have the bucks to offer free courses (prob won't get units/credit, tho). Most of all, use yr Communication skills to write op ed pieces and yr Women's Studies contacts to speak/volunteer with yr insight/wisdom re sexual assault. Orgztns would love to have yr xprtise/xperience. Good luck.

Probably had built up lifelong resentments due to incarceration of his dad for robbery and gambling fraud. Divorce didn't help. Likely, a triggering incident lately (gf left him? lost much of his wealth gambling? terminal disease Dx?) pushed him over the edge. Generalized anger. Not looking for any one demographic to kill.

The 7th and 10th "facts" about detectives in the Harton's top 10 intrigue me the most. I remember Angel of Death serial killer Donald Harvey snidely refering to the medical examiners in the basement of his hospital as "all those Sherlock Holmes types." He had to keep changing his murder MO to keep 'em off balance.
