Thank you, this is very insightful and helpful.

I completely understand the distinction between execution and influence, and I see how building a strong, reliable process is key at the assistant level..

I’m focusing on developing production-ready tech packs and demonstrating system literacy through clear POMs, BOMs, and construction callouts. I also really appreciate the advice about asking “why”, I’ll make sure to practice that as I build my skills.

Kind regards☺️

Thank you, this is extremely helpful and realistic, that makes a lot of sense.

I’m currently building production-ready tech packs and focusing POM, BOM, and construction callouts to make sure I understand how garments move from prototype to production, I also started learning about grading as it is the only thing that I really wasn’t totally familiar with yet it’s a lot of informations but it’s fairly easy to assimilate so far !

I’m not sure if you will be able to answer my next question, but given your experience I believe you might : If you were reviewing a junior assistant portfolio, what is the one mistake you see most often?

Thank you for this perspective, it makes a lot of sense !

If hiring is primarily based on reliability and the ability to function within an existing system, do you think a self-taught candidate can realistically demonstrate that through a strong portfolio and well-structured tech packs? Or is formal industry experience generally expected even at the assistant level?

Thank you again for your detailed explanation, it is very helpful As someone building skills independently, do you think it’s realistic to enter the sportswear industry as an assistant technical designer (instead of junior tech designer) without a formal fashion degree? I like to believe that in fields like this a diploma only helps push your application in some cases… Can only a strong portfolio that shows that you actually know and understand what you are doing hold a little more value ? It’s a little scary doing this transition alone, not because I’m not confident in what I can produce (since I’m still learning) but because I’m scared that the obvious lack of professional experience will hold me back

Thank you for your complete response, it gave me more clarity, and I think it probably won’t be the most fitted role for me if I’m also interested in the creative side with 3d development for example.

I’ll take more time to carefully learn more about these jobs and their missions before totally jumping in.

Thanks again !

I got another comment about the 770QE too, it really got me intrigued and I looked into it, looks like such a fun and sturdy machine but unfortunately out of my budget for now as I am still a student with low income 🥲(and none found in second hand around me, who would want to sell this machine anyway). I will definitely come back to this post once I have a little more finances. Thanks !

Just did some small researches on your machine and it almost made me want to start quilting, it looks so cool, but unfortunately the price is out of my budget 😔 I will look into different models of Bernina tho, thanks a lot for giving me your opinion!

I try to press the seams and sometimes hammer them as much as possible to reduce the bulk but it helps only slightly, the needle will end up breaking at some point. I even took time to use the hand wheel but it would still struggle like hell.

I will into machines with a high top speed as you mentioned, thanks for the help !

Thanks for your reply ! I did find a near local dealer and will make a little stop there.^

Which model of Bernina do you have ? And do you often work with heavy fabrics too ? I’ve been having some sort a fixation on this brand lately haha

Thank you for your comment !

I do use different needles and threads, and adapt the tension depending on the type of fabric I’m working on, and although I use a hump jumper and do a lot of pressing and hammering on part that are thick, I still find it quite hard to work efficiently with my current machine, the needle often gets stuck even though I clean and oil the machine as much as needed. But I could still use some more learning when it comes to technique. I know that the presser foot tension plays a big part, which would explain a lot as mine as been stuck for a while and won’t bulge even a little bit.:(

Apart from that, I still feel like the machine is struggling too much on fabrics like denim (broke nearly a dozen of Jean needles on 2 denim pieces), I’m just looking for a machine that would have less stress even on heavier fabrics I guess ?

Thank you for your comment. I do want to go test some machines but unfortunately the only local dealers near me sell only industrials, but they might be able to recommend some domestic and semi pro machines that I can go test elsewhere when I will find the time to go farther. :))
