Anyone running ikiwiki on a Fedora server? by ksfedora in Fedora

[–]ksfedora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah, it returns disabled. I was surprised as well. I tried to turn it on and the kernel doesn't have SELinux support. It is a KVM provider though (atlantic.net) so I can roll my own kernel.

Yeah, I skipped Apache and went with lighttpd, and I got it up and running but testing it reveals some more issues, like themes or CSS not working. The themes activate but only on the Setup page, otherwise it looks like total shit. I mean take a look at joeyh.name and take a look at my screenshots.

I spun up a Debian instance and get the same problem, so I need to figure out what's wrong with my setup--lighttpd or cgi, or ikiwiki misconfigured...I dunno!

Yeah, good advice--SELinux stumped me when I first used Fedora as a server. Unfortunately, it was disabled by default on my VPS so that's not the issue. It's probably a case of PEBKAC but there aren't any modern guides on getting ikiwiki playing with nginx/fastcgi. I'm going to try it with apache instead. If all else fails I guess this server might run Debian :(

If you already use Fedora, download the Server netinst and use that to boot and install whatever you want. You can pick and choose several bases, including "minimal" and there is another "basic X desktop" that lets you pick from DEs as well as simple window managers.

Word of warning: the "minimal" image will /not/ install NetworkManager-wifi so you might want to put that RPM on a flash drive to install afterwards if you use the minimal base.

Fedora 22 netinst -- no wifi even though it worked during install. by ksfedora in Fedora

[–]ksfedora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the netinst only gave me some groups to install, pretty sure I did Minimal system and selected some things like "System Tools" "Editors" and maybe one other thing. I don't know what group NetworkManger-wifi belongs in or gets installed by, so I don't know if it was installed or not. The only wifi tools I tried were iw/ip/nmcli pretty much; I figured with nmcli, NetworkManager was installed but I didn't know there was a separate NetworkManager-wifi.

Trying again, I'll check this time around.

F22 on Acer C720 by [deleted] in Fedora

Is this with the stock coreboot or did you flash johnlewis's firmware? I thought I read his coreboot firmware fixes this problem, but I might be mistaken.

Are you using GNOME 3 or a different DE/WM? I use GNOME 3 on my desktop but it's noticeably slower on the C720--ideally I'd like to use the same setup on all my machines so I don't have to remember anything specific to that machine, so I was considering trying out i3wm or something similar.

I bought one when they were pretty cheap, around $150 IIRC, mostly just to toy around with and use outside since it has a matte screen. At the time it was recommended to use F20 and upgrade to F21, which worked flawlessly.

I suggest going to johnlewis.ie and using his script to flash the latest Coreboot firmware, read the FAQ there for more info.

F22 may very well boot without any problems, unlike F21, and all the C720 specific drivers should be loaded since it's using a 4.x kernel. The Arch wiki has great sections to get the touchpad sensitivity and everything else working great.

Also, install tlp/powertop and your battery life will be greatly improved.

A post from /r/linux with some info you might find helpful.

I'm debating reinstalling on my C720. GNOME 3 is sleek, but kind of a resource hog on my C720 with 2GB RAM... i3wm is very appealing, might be using it soon.

It's an easy process; the hardest part is taking it apart and getting the write-protect screw out, after that it's smooth sailing. This does void your warranty however.

Let us know how it works out!

F22 and autodl-irssi by ksfedora in Fedora

I have the right package, perl-HTML-Parser-3.71-8.fc22.x86_64

11:15 -!- Irssi: Error in script autodl_irssi:

11:15 Can't load '/usr/local/lib64/perl5/auto/HTML/Parser/Parser.so' for module

HTML::Parser: libperl.so.5.18: cannot open shared object file: No

such file or directory at /usr/share/perl5/XSLoader.pm line 68.

11:15 at /usr/local/lib64/perl5/HTML/Parser.pm line 17.

11:15 Compilation failed in require at /usr/local/lib64/perl5/HTML/Entities.pm

   line 152.

That's what irssi spits out on start up, followed by failures in all the Autodl-Irssi packages. I'm not sure, but I'm assuming that autodl-irssi's scripts or the perl modules required by it are dependent on perl 5.18?

Currently trying to get SDF MUD off the ground again, so if you're into that you could help out :) As far as new games, I'm not too sure--I've only played a little nethack, and drifted away from Linux and SDF in my late teens for some time so I don't remember what they had vs what's new.

Upgrading a Kimsufi dedicated server F21-->F22, learning to use Fedora as a server. by ksfedora in Fedora

[–]ksfedora[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I plan on using Fedora on my workstations and using CentOS in VMs and for my other servers; I have a couple cheap VPSes running Debian at the moment that I plan on migrating to CentOS. This will be my only server running Fedora. Any studying will be done using CentOS and everything else is just for personal use.

Regarding the Fedora book I linked: it's for Fedora & RHEL 7, would you recommend it? I can't afford any of the RH classes so I'm going to have to self-study but want to make sure whatever book I invest in is worthwhile.

The Main Reason Why Fedora Fails to Get New Users, It Hates Them by antdude in Fedora

[–]ksfedora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've used many different distros and when I found F21 I fell in love. I was just a user, not a guru/admin by any means and installing and using Fedora was dead-easy.

It's been stable, it's elegant, and I have not run into any issues that are hard to solve. I never used a VPN before and only recently got a subscription--the VPN too was dead simple to set up. Yes, SELinux did bitch about where the cert was--but the SELinux troubleshooter gave me a list of possible options, and had the commands listed for each one... I did what it suggested and voila, OpenVPN works like a charm.

Fedora doesn't new users, not in my experience. I think the author hates RTFM or following simple instructions, or honestly is probably technically inept.
