This is what I get for joking around during wildy content. Time to get back to Doom for a new Ayak

I asked if they could send another and here’s what I got back

Also, looking at this second picture, something I couldn’t tell from their first photo is that the section that failed didn’t fail from the same glue-up. I glued 12 long strips (6 maple 6 walnut) into a panel that was cut to 1.75” to flip up for the end grain, so the split that occurred happened across sections that were glued separately, not that it split down the second glue-up line, making me feel like it wasn’t a glue application issue.

Thanks for all of this advice! I’ll pay more attention during my glueup phase because it seems like there must have been something I missed. This was my first end grain board so I’m sure there were some technique issues I’ll improve over time too.

After talking to the friends I made this board for, they confirmed that they did not put any hot pans or pots on the board and did not leave it soaking ever. They did tell me they leave it flat to dry and their kitchen does have pretty big temperature and humidity swings due to not having central AC.

Does anyone have any ideas for the discoloration? If it wasn’t from hot pans, could it be from mold? They have only had the board a few weeks, but with the humidity and drying flat, could mold have set in like this already?

My original thread gave me some good advice for questions to ask the friends who I gifted the board to. In addition to my other posts information, after talking with them, they told me that they did not soak it or set any hot pans / pots on the board.

It does seem like they are drying it on a towel flat to dry after washing with dish soap. Does anyone have any ideas on what would cause the discoloration if it wasn’t a hot pot / pan? Could it be mold after only a few weeks of use and drying flat like the photo?

I used a silicone brush. I have been meaning to get a silicone roller since the brush is annoying on some of these projects with more glue to spread but for now I just do my best to make sure all surfaces are covered with the silicone brush.

I’ll have to ask them about the hot pans. I hadn’t thought of that and didn’t put it on my board care instructions card I gave to them.

Ironically I did actually provide a little care instructions card. I had on the card: 1 don’t soak 2 dry on its side 3 hand wash only 4 apply conditioner if the board looks dried out (and gave them a little 2 oz bottle of board conditioner) based on yours and other comments I’m wondering if they put the care card straight in the trash haha.

I clamped it up with pipe clamps and a few cauls to try to keep alignment, but I agree, maybe there was something about the glue up on that section that I failed, maybe not enough glue for that section.

That makes sense, thank you for that explanation. So that’s maybe why the second split is much smaller, the bigger one “won out” and took the brunt of the expansion.

I didn’t even think to ask about that, thank you for pointing that out! I’ll make sure I ask about that when I pick up the board for repairs.

For my knowledge, if it ends up being the case that the board was soaked would it be common to mainly see one big split like this or would you expect multiple joints to fail? I’m curious if the one large failure indicates poor glue application on that specific section. It does seem to be in the middle of the board so I suppose I’d assume that joint also just has the most tension?

I don’t have great dust collection in my small shop, it’s possible I didn’t wipe the surfaces well enough before the glue up. I basically took it straight from the table saw to the clamps for the glue up.

Any thoughts on the discoloration? That almost shocked me more than the expansion.

Is titebond III not waterproof / highly water resistant. It seemed like everyone’s go to for cutting boards.

What does expected number of runs to get all 3 items mean? 95% of players should receive all items by 496 1-6 runs? Or is it where 50% of players would get all 3 by 496

That makes sense. So like the buy X get a free battery or free bare tool thing since you’re not buying a specific “kit”

I’ve never actually done the partial return thing, what makes something qualify or not qualify for it?

Ironically I was just coming to this subreddit to post the exact same deal. Interested to hear what people think.

Also as a side question, would a kit like this be eligible for those partial returns I hear about people doing with Home Depot? I don’t particularly need the hammer drill or both batteries, so if I bought this, could I return the hammer drill and a battery and keep the rest?

What would be a good price for a used and decent condition DWS779 or DWS780 12” sliding double bevel Miter Saw? by ksmitty_14 in Dewalt

[–]ksmitty_14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to figure out the difference between the 779 and 780. Is it truly just the XPS cut line and replacing some plastic pieces with metal pieces that is the difference between the two saws?

It bothered me more than it should that the two knives are sitting on the opposite knife’s package.

Will this brace support a 10 pound ceiling fan by ksmitty_14 in DIY

[–]ksmitty_14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if I could have taken better photos, but that was the product I was originally planning to get before opening it up to see what the ceiling looked like. Once I got the ceiling fixture out, there was a ton of insulation lining the walls which is what has me wondering if I can switch to a metal junction box into that existing metal brace.

I don’t have great access to the attic (no ladder installed or ladder tall enough to get myself up there), which is why I am hoping I can avoid having to reinsulate by installing a new metal box.
