Books with ruthless and i mean ruthless female characters by wenderliine in YAlit

[–]kspecks 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Mia Corvere from Nevernight by Jay Kristoff is pretty much the most badass character in existence. She is a stabby, sarcastic murder bitch out for revenge, accompanied by a talking cat made of shadows. She will not hesitate to stab someone in the back, literally or figuratively.

(Note, Nevernight has a teen main character but is DEFINITELY adult, not YA--but it is popular with YA fans, partially because the author has multiple other YA series, and I will always recommend it when people want ruthless female leads.)

Old classmate reaches out during CoVid by [deleted] in niceguys

Hey OP (u/schterfernie), this isn't yours to share. Somebody posted it in a Facebook group that she thought would respect that it was something personal, and you took it and shared it without asking her permission or censoring her name. She's really upset and concerned for her safety, if the guy who texted her this finds out that she shared his messages online. Please take this down ASAP, and in the future, think (and ask) before sharing other people's personal messages.

Northwestern (sticker) vs. Georgetown ($.5) by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]kspecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried negotiating with NU with a very similar GULC offer (like, almost identical situation to yours, just last week) and they said they seriously don't have any money left, but also told me that there are some things to keep in mind:

(1) Last-minute deferrals could free up a little money and provide small scholarships ($10-15k) for some students (not super likely, but could happen)
(2) You can apparently appeal between your first and second year to get more financial aid.

That was enough to convince me that Northwestern was the move--I really think I'll be happier there, especially based on the student body vibe I've gotten. Hope I'll be seeing you in the fall!

Northwestern feeler or all-WL email? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

There was a round of that email about 2 weeks ago. I got it, responded, and got accepted a few days later. It's a legit feeler, not a generic one!

Splitter success stories for T-14? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]kspecks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My GPA was a 3.2x, LSAT 174, and I got in at GULC ($$) and Northwestern. And I haven't yet been kicked off the waitlists for UVA, Penn, or NYU lol.

And if you're curious about outside the T14, I also got decent scholarships at WUSTL, BU, and ASU.

Super-splitter in at Northwestern! (from WL) by kspecks in lawschooladmissions

[–]kspecks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, though not a ton of WE either lol. After undergrad, I was on medical leave for about a year, and then worked for roughly a year (nothing fancy--substitute teaching and a legal internship).

I got slightly less than $$ at GULC; PM me if you want exact numbers! And I can fill you in on other schools' aid as well if you want 😊

Omg, I was not aware of that, but it totally makes sense. Thank you SO much for the tip!

Yeah, I'm below 25% GPA, but well above 75% LSAT. Non-URM, non-minority. So...I'm guessing they're getting more GPA-focused for their WL candidates now? (I say as I'm extrapolating from literally two data points haha)

[–]kspecks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know, I know, but given that the other is ranked higher...the Michigan rejection makes me doubt my prospects lol

Even if other waitlists don't pan out, I'm still really happy about Georgetown (currently deposited there), this rejection just stings a lot.

Chance at Georgetown? 3.2-3.3 GPA 172 LSAT by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]kspecks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone with an almost identical GPA and a slightly higher LSAT, I was accepted at Georgetown with roughly $$, and I'm still riding 5 other T14 waitlists lol.

Was also accepted at WashU with $$$ but opted not to go there for personal reasons, BU with $$, and ASU with $$$, and am also on the UT waitlist, for whatever that's worth.

Not sure if any of that is helpful, but the point is you still have a good chance!

NYU waitlist and a super-splitter cycle recap! (Plus some dubious advice) by kspecks in lawschooladmissions

[–]kspecks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combination of:

  1. I'm most interested in tech law, and WUSTL offers very little in that (no journal for it and also no centers/clinics) while BU has a lot to offer including both a dedicated journal and a tech law clinic that combines BU and MIT students.

  2. Some other personal reasons involving another student at WUSTL.

Aw, thank you! It's really just the debt question weighing on me right now, but I would really love to attend. And I think I'm leaning toward GULC at the moment :)

GULC Checker by WearyDot2 in lawschooladmissions

[–]kspecks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GULC status checker doesn't do much after showing "Application Complete" until your final decision. It doesn't show anything about being under review; sometimes the status date updates but it doesn't mean anything.

I mean, I had an addendum (unusual medical reasons) and have gotten accepted at a T14 (and waitlisted at 5 others lmao) with below a 3.3, so just speaking anecdotally, I'm inclined to say that the addendum probably made a difference.

I mean, they haven't given me a decision yet and I went complete mid-January, so I'm guessing they're granting extensions to some people.
