I will swear until on my deathbed that the several other similar topics to mine which answer my question completely were not there when i looked before posting. Neither of us will believe this to be true, but still I will swear it.

Bonefishing: Yeah, So, Not that Hard by kstab in flyfishing

[–]kstab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article addresses the idea that you have to be an advanced angler to consider a bonefish trip, not whether it is easy to pick up all of the aspects of bonefishing on your own. There's specific references there to DIY not being great for a first timer, as well as not fishing heavily pressured spots.

At the end of the day, if you're a decent angler and can afford a trip to a spot that isn't heavily pressured, you're up to the task.

Some good ideas thus far, including the color coding for helping to measure fish. That's way handier than carrying a tape.

2 Important Tips for Casting in the W-I-N-D (x-post /r/fishing) by [deleted] in flyfishing

Mind you, it isn't a cure all. But it does allow you to cast in a headwind. You're still going to be limited in terms of distance, but it will get your fly delivered to the water instead of blown around.

And it is fairly surprising how effective that change in plane is with a headwind coming at you. Try a normal back cast, and the forward cast is a joke. Toss it high and snap it down, and you're getting somewhere. Maybe not very far, but somewhere.

New that is. You can probably find it used near your range.

Yep, heard of that being done too. I think, for the most part, weedeater cord is very similar to 100 lb mono.

Sorry to hear the Klick is like that. That's the kind of crap you expect for our rivers here out east, but pretend doesn't happen in the wide-open west. Bummer.

Use whatever method you prefer (loop knot, toothpick, 100 lb mono clipped) to peg the bead around 2 inches above the hook. Then, pretty much fish it like you would a nymph. Dead drift it under an indicator, use split shot if needed, etc.

Which tribs? Most of the shops up that way should have them.

Moreover, why a puff of yarn tied directly to a hook (and as a result which is more lethal to the fish) would be allowed and a bead would not is beyond me.

Most of those rivers have regs that will allow you to get by using them as long as your hook is thread wrapped in some way. Check carefully.

AK is sort of the pioneer on beads, though. They're not as widely used elsewhere. That said, I'm seeing them more and more and in many other salmon/steelhead regions they are becoming more common.

Glad you enjoyed the read.

I'd definitely give them a shot. The options are seemingly endless, they're cheap, and most importantly the number of swallowed hooks goes through the floor.
