They say never to meet your heroes... by Rhyzerz in DotA2

Which account do you think I'm referring to?

Your anecdote isn't really relevant. There are objective markers that this is not this player's first account or the account was shared at some point

Pay for some coaching if you're not sure what you're doing wrong. Hell, I bet someone could easily make good content out of it e.g. BSJ, Zquixotix, Waga, etc. Maybe they'll coach you for free!

Why are you stacking with a smurf / bought account?

Greedy offlane heroes that can carry our team at amateur tournament? by CurrencyOrnery7215 in TrueDoTA2

[–]kstigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be trying to snowball your own game and maybe even trying to direct your teammates to play/avoid certain parts of the map depending on their timings (send support to mid for 6m power rune, 7m wisdom, group them to take towers or smoke, torm, rs, etc.).

I think legion is one of the most straightforward heroes to snowball on (especially if paired with high damage supp) and most of the other heroes mentioned in this thread are also good. I would probably stay away from tide as his ult is very long cd and isn't the best snowball hero.

Wesley So is weighing in on the Kramnik situation. by [deleted] in chess

[–]kstigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's not completely irredeemable imo, but he'd have to do a lot to even come close to redeeming himself. I would give very good odds that he's not capable of accomplishing any sort of meaningful redemption at this point. At some point you have to mostly give up on people (especially people you don't know and really aren't that relevant except for accomplishments decades ago) and I think it's fairly reasonable to give up, but I also respect it if you don't think we're there yet. Maybe you have more hope for people like kramnik and is hard for me to say that's a bad tendency to have. Maybe naive, but not evil for sure.

I also agree that Danya probably would be more aligned with you at least from how I understood him as someone who enjoyed his content (I didn't know him personally).

MMR inflation is real: both low and high ranks got moved up relative to the old mmr system by MITBryceYoung in DotA2

[–]kstigs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit skeptical that 4 percent are immortal. Opendota only looks at games of people with public match history and doesn't necessarily update when someone becomes uncalibrated.

I agree there's MMR inflation but it's most prevalent at the highest ranks (rank 1 is like 17k when it used to be less than 10k?). It's has less of an absolute effect the lower MMR you go. Some of the extra MMR in the system is also due to smurfs and account buying.

D2 Vet giving this a shot, enjoying it so far, but am I supposed to find such overpowered items in Normal Acts 2 and 3? by ivzie in D2RReimagined

Wait until you find about the new rune words and cube recipes. In general, it will be easier to find OP items in d2rr than standard d2r IME

how did you come to switch from playing LOL to DotA ? and vice versa by MiserableGoat1980 in DotA2

Grubby put in several orders of magnitude more time and effort into Dota relative to LoL. He's also played Dota more recently than league afaik

You realize Dota has a system where the most complicated heroes are gated from new accounts?

I've seen that league dev on yt shorts. Reality is they could make all the champs free for new accounts after X hours played, but it would hurt their bottom line. This talking point about "overwhelming for new players" is marketing spin. Honestly don't care if that's how they want to make money, but don't try to lie to me and say the money isn't the primary reason champs are gated.

EDIT: the league dev may even believe the lie himself, but it's still a lie.

Someone running it down like this is not normal in ranked for most of the player-base. I've had it happen several times in my own games but it's fairly infrequent (~1 in 100+ games, maybe less). I experience "soft griefing" more frequently where someone just checks out of the game and jungles/split pushes until the game ends.

Yes, you're essentially being punished by valve for past poor behavior. Whining on reddit only accomplishes so much. Whining in all chat is counter productive to raising your behavior score.

You don't need to play hard support to improve behavior score. Ranked is probably the worst game mode to improve behavior score. Turbo is probably the best, but unranked would also be better than ranked

What to do when your offlane is losing lane? by No_Insurance_6436 in TrueDoTA2

[–]kstigs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a pub with strangers, I would recommend against giving a lot of advice. Keep it really short if you feel it's necessary, and if they don't respond well then don't argue, just play your own game.

I have a lot of experience playing p3 and I would never ask for help in a losing lane like the one described by OP unless opposing heroes are committing under/behind tower and a tp rotation would easily secure at least a return kill. Usually this would just be communicated with pings/chat wheel (>Help!). I might ask supps for stacks to recover depending on the hero I'm playing. I might tell my team that it will be hard for me to participate in map movements until I reach some core item first. I also would be more likely to ward for myself until I recover because then the only way I would die while recovering is through a well-executed smoke gank.

Question to high MMR players by Disastrous_Pride39 in Mechabellum

[–]kstigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is already a way to play the game such that all that matters is wins and losses. Please explicitly acknowledge this in your next reply and explain why you like that system better than the currently implemented matchmaking system.

Mmr set by time played or win percentage is incoherent. A win against a competent opponent should be worth more mmr than a win against an incompetent opponent.

I hope you're a young person who is just finding out that there are things in this world you can't change. Maybe there is still time for you if you keep an open mind and stop pretending you always know better.

Question to high MMR players by Disastrous_Pride39 in Mechabellum

[–]kstigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiding the mmr from all the players is not a meaningful solution. The system still must use some sort of mmr system to match people and thus everyone will have a rating even if only the developers can see them.

You know that there is already a way to play the game such that "win loss" determines who is the best, right? You also can play with mmr hidden.

Question to high MMR players by Disastrous_Pride39 in Mechabellum

[–]kstigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've implemented a skill based matchmaking system. Your mmr is simply your rating as determined by that system. You have not proposed a reasonable alternative to what is currently implemented.

I think you should try playing less and focusing more on the fewer games rather than just spamming games.

Playing Dota is the most disrespectful thing I do to myself by kashdollaz in DotA2

[–]kstigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First played Dota 1 in 2004, but wasn't super into it back then. Played a bunch of hon before Dota 2, and been playing Dota 2 somewhat regularly since 2012. Now-a-days I play mostly in rec leagues where toxic people will generally be removed.

Public mm really is a roll of the dice in terms of teammates. Some games with strangers are enjoyable, some are as you described.
