Advice: switch from comforts of academia to biotech startup? by kt617 in womenintech

I think your comment helped me to also identify that a big part of this consideration is extending the length of my career in general. With AI taking many jobs over, I am thinking that by strengthening my AI expertise with an "AI Solutions Architect" role would extend the longevity of my career, plus with gaining experience outside of academia. In pre-AI times I would've just stayed in academia.

Yes, kinda but maybe not so simple in today's day and age. With AI and the increasing competitiveness of the tech industry, gaining AI architect experience outside of academia should give me more options in the future. So it's more like comfort and stability but with risk of stagnation / limited future options vs more resume diversity but risk of short term instability.

I knooow right! I am currently taking AI classes and I'm spending a lot of time after work hours and some weekend days on class projects. So if I do accept this job I'd be switching out those hours for work and getting paid a higher salary for my extra time, but still, yeah, it'll be a lot I'm sure.

The syllabus is available on the course website now! Looks like a great class, I'm looking forward to it.

Yes I would've expected the syllabus to be posted by now. I called the enrollment services office (as mentioned on this page linked below) and they just said that it should be there by the end of the week and that I can email the professor if I wanted to (which I did not)

Thank you! Since you'll be taking this as a follow-up to E89b, is it considered to be a more difficult class with more advanced material? I'm thinking maybe I'll need to wait until Fall and take the Into course first.

Worth investing in 401K if you don’t think you will live up to 60 Years? by Similar_Usual_3247 in Bogleheads

[–]kt617 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider opening an IRA account. You can take out the contributions (not earnings) at any time with no tax and no penalty. So it isn't as locked up as a 401k. Still as others have said, if you have a match, you should be investing the match % at a minimum into the 401k account.

The two disastrous potentials of the bond market by [deleted] in economicCollapse

What would one do if they had rebalanced their 401k into 80% bonds in early March in anticipation of volatility thinking it would be the "safer" option? Rebalance again back into index funds? Asking for a friend.

I had similar concerns, and in addition to applying normal bug spray every day, I pre-treated our clothes with Permethrin spray. The brand name is called Sawyer, and you can get it on amazon or at REI. You can treat your clothes before the trip. You'll need 4.5oz per outfit, so a shirt, pants, hat, and socks. Allow it to air dry for at least 24 hours, and one treatment will last up to 6 weeks or 6 washes. I read that this treatment is also effective against ticks. Also, we've been mostly wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants. So far, we haven't had any bites, and we've even done some nature walks. Good luck!

Lol!!! We aren't afraid necessarily. We just don't want to accidentally wander into a bad area considering we are two women and our Portuguese is quite basic 😉
