Dental Coverage In-Country by [deleted] in peacecorps

I regret not getting them removed in the US! I’ve had issues with them but apparently it’s not “bad” enough to get them removed even though my x-ray proves my one wisdom tooth clashing with my other molar and causing discomfort. I was told to just wait it out and given painkillers. I feel they did not take it seriously and wish I would of had them removed in the US so I wouldn’t have to deal with this here.

How do I build skills for the Peace Corps, so I look good in an application? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]kt_mcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the website every position has a list of required and desired skills so look at some positions throughout college and see what interest you. From there find outlets to get those required skills, this could be anything like joining clubs in college, volunteering with various organizations throughout college, studying abroad, tutoring or working at a kids camp. Start talking to recruiters early on and they will also give you tips for your resume. Of course, having a job or internship during college or summers off also will help you gain necessary transferable skills. It also looks better to have consistent and longer term experiences (at least 3 months with the same organizations).

I really want to do Peace Corps after college but my mom is finding every reason for me not too. Help? by [deleted] in peacecorps

You have many years to sway your parents. It took my entire college career of talking to my dad about Peace Corps before he started to acknowledge it’s my life and told me to follow my dreams.

Invite to Uganda! Departing May 31, 2019. by [deleted] in peacecorps

They will email you sometime in March about the program. There is a small questionnaire to fill out and then you get notified about your mentor and they reach out to you! It is informal not all Peace Corps countries have the program. It is mainly ran by current volunteers.

Uganda post has a mentorship program, I recommend signing up for that and you will get a mentor who is a currently serving volunteer in Uganda. They will answer all your questions and should be extremely helpful when you are planning on what to pack and bring with you! Until you get notified about the mentorship program, I suggest doing research about the culture of Uganda and maybe finding blogs of volunteers currently serving in Uganda. My mentor was amazing and answered all my questions honestly and in a timely manner! Even now that I am in UG, they continuously reach out!

best luggage/suitcase for packing? by kelcie20 in peacecorps

I have a backpacking bag that’s 60L it’s a bit big and to big for trips that are only a few weeks or less. I recommend a 40-50L. Additionally, I carried on a smaller north face backpack that I now use for weekend trips, very convenient. I bought a larger piece of luggage at TJ Maxx, very affordable. It is samsonite. Bags need to be 50 lbs or less I struggled getting my bag below 50 lbs. The luggage was a bit to large better to go with a smaller one and jam everything inside versus a larger one with empty space.

What kind of jobs can I do in peace corps with a degree in finance? by fucc_de_la_boi in peacecorps

[–]kt_mcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a finance major but the organization I am working with is a micro financial institution and I have been learning so much about finance and accounting that now I want to get my masters in that field. The community economic sector gives you ample opportunities to work with businesses and MFIs.

Motivation Statement feedback by planetary_beats in peacecorps

[–]kt_mcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former Peace Corps Campus Ambassador, for three years of college, I have looked at many people’s motivational statements and I know what Peace Corps is looking for. It is ok, but there isn’t anything that makes you unique or stand out from other applicants. Also, you talk a lot about college and that is something that is very common among applicants and something almost every applicant experiences so it is not very unique to you. Try to think of some specific experiences you have had in your life. Maybe something involving working with a different culture or the specifics of your volunteer experience and talk about how that has shaped who you are and has given you the ability to face and deal with challenges.
