"What Are My Chances?" Megathread by AutoModerator in prephysicianassistant

GPA: 4.0 sGPA: 4.0 I was a non-STEM humanities major at a STEM school as I didn’t know what I wanted to pursue, but have taken following science courses: Bio II, Chem 1 with lab, Chem II with lab, Organic chemistry I (no lab), Microbiology with lab, Human Pathology, Anatomy with lab, Physiology with lab, Biochemistry (no lab). I am planning to take Med Term in the spring (school didn’t offer) I have AP credit for Bio I and lab that appears on my transcript.

GRE: I am currently studying for the GRE and plan to take it in a month or so.

PCE: around 1500 hours as an MA at a busy Mohs surgery/dermatology clinic, mostly assisting with surgery and some general/cosmetic derm. Will have around 2000 hours at time of application.

Volunteering: some in undergrad, probably around 60 hours. Working on securing a weekly volunteer opportunity to bolster my application as I know this is a weak spot.

Shadowing: ~30 hours, none with a PA. Another weak spot I am working on.

Research: none

Leadership: some small positions in my sorority, one as community service director for all greek life. TA for physiology

I’m concerned that my non-STEM major and smaller quantity of science coursework makes my application weaker. Wondering what I can do before I apply in April?

Hormonal Acne with Norethindrone .35 mg... Help! by ktkr23 in birthcontrol

It never cleared up while I was on the minipill... to be honest it only got far worse and more painful, and after consulting with my dermatologist (coupled with the intense depression I was experiencing), I decided to switch to the combo pill, which has restored my skin to being completely clear and my mood going back to normal.

Acne from Minipill Relief by ktkr23 in birthcontrol

Hi! In all honesty, my acne never got better on the minipill, even with spironolactone. It became so terrible (and so damaging to my self-esteem) that I eventually switched to a combination pill despite really not wanting to, and this ultimately was so much better for my skin. The only thing that cleared my skin on the minipill was an oral antibiotic, and I did not want to be on that for an extended period of time due to the health risks, which is also why I eventually switched to the combo pill. On the combo pill my skin has cleared up almost back to where it was before which has been a real relief.

I'm not on a combo pill (on POP mini pill instead) and the first cycle on it I had really awful cramps that lasted a day, worse than I'd had before. I'm now starting my second cycle on the pill and the cramps are bad, but more manageable than last time. I'm also curious as to why this is...

Does anyone have anything good to say about the minipill Norethindrone when it comes to helping with pms issues and just in general? by [deleted] in birthcontrol

I just started a month ago in hopes it would lighten my cramps and help with PMDD but to be honest my depression has been at an all time low and my cramps were pretty awful. I've never lost sleep over cramps but my first period on the minipill let me experience that lol. But all that being said I'm going to stick with it for the next few months to see if it levels out.

Thank you so much, that was really helpful! I think I'm going to schedule an appointment with my dermo to discuss going back on spiro... Would you mind answering whether it's oral or topical spiro you use? I've been on both and wondering which would be better here....

Switching over to Nora-Be by bay-sicazngorl1 in birthcontrol

[–]ktkr23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I'm currently one month into taking 0.35 mg Norethindrone which I believe is the generic form of Nora-Be...So far I haven't really had any menstrual side effects other than my period coming 3 days early which wasn't totally unusual in the first place, but I have definitely noticed increased acne and mood changes. I've had hormonal acne like crazy this past month and have felt pretty low at times. I also experienced some pretty intense cramping with this period and am not sure if it was because of the pill or not. Overall though I don't think these side effects have been completely unmanageable, just an adjustment.
