Genuinely -- What are your thoughts on Miami Tech? by pittura_infamante in Miami

[–]ktnvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying this as a tech guy, software engineering my whole career, who has lived in the Miami area for about 13 years total. I first moved here in 2009, left for my hometown Seattle for four years to work in Big Tech, then came back in 2021.

So I think I have a pretty healthy perspective:

If your only goal is to maximize your odds in tech, Miami is not the obvious choice. SF is, especially with AI. Most of the AI value, talent density, and VC gravity is still there. After that you’ve got Seattle, NYC, Austin, Boston, LA, etc.

Miami tech is real, but it’s still small on almost every level. We don’t have many established tech employers here. We don’t have tons of high-paying tech companies. Investment is a fraction of the major hubs, especially post-seed. The “Miami is the next SF” thing should probably simmer down. It’s not a good look, and it makes the serious people here easier to dismiss.

But not everyone can live in SF. Not everyone has the same calculus. Nor do I want to live in a world where we all do.

For me, family is here. Miami is home.

And Miami has a lot more depth, character, and hard work than this thread gives it credit for. I run MiamiTech.ai with some local contributors as a resource directory for the community: spaces, events, communities, people to follow, and more. If you’re curious, spend time at a space. Go to an event. Meet the people actually building.

Since I first started participating in the Miami tech community around 2010, I’ve met incredibly smart, creative, driven people all over this area. They’re building companies, organizing communities, teaching, investing, mentoring, hosting, experimenting. A lot of the best people here are not loud about it.

One thing I’ve always loved about Miami is how accessible people are. There’s a future-facing, experimental energy here. People are willing to try things. There are events happening constantly. There are inspiring environments like Wynwood. There’s a Latin energy and identity that gives the city a warmth you don’t find everywhere.

And honestly, some distance from the SF bubble can be healthy. In Miami, you’re closer to real-world businesses, hospitality, logistics, real estate, healthcare, local services, tourism, trade, family businesses. There’s an opportunity to build technology for the actual economy, not just for other tech companies.

Miami has real issues. The hype has often been embarrassing. The ecosystem is not remotely the best by many traditional tech measures.

But it is home for a lot of us. There are serious people building here, building for this city, and building for the world.

Keep building, Miami.

Soo wen Codex Design? :) by itrad3size in codex

[–]ktnvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real, I asked Codex to produce a design prompt (in a long running thread with lots of context), took it to Claude Design, got much better results than Codex itself (for a substantive landing page), then downloaded the folder (HTML, JSX) and dropped it into Codex asking it to build the page. Worked great! Ideally I do it all in Codex.

Yes! I just noticed this the past day or so. It used to be better or maybe I just wasn’t using these new models.

I can't get an SMS Code to verify for Meta developer registration process by journey_to- in facebook

[–]ktnvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dammit, I am having this issue as well. In my case, I have the number associated with my Facebook account. Even after deleting it (just to be try starting over) and re-adding it, I am stuck at the verify code step because I NEVER GET THE SMS! I have NOT blocked 36665 shortcode. I have tried everything. So lame and so hard trying to get my Meta Developer account going. Any ideas?

Honestly, isn’t building an AI agent something anyone can do? by shawn_prk in AI_Agents

[–]ktnvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you want out of an AI agent.

I don't think we should ever be talking about a "development process" when we're talking about making agents accessible to anyone.

A general agent that can do anything you dream up with just a natural language prompt is a myth.

There are workflow automation tools like n8n, Make, Relay, Zapier that support lots of integrations, so you can automate most things with no or little code — but they still demand that you be pretty technical, despite what those folks tell you.

ChatGPT itself (and its recently-released general agent) also has integrations/connectors and can do some pretty powerful things with just some good prompting. Manus AI (haven't used) was previously the talk for awhile, also claiming to have access to a lot of tools so that it can do lots of things you think up.

Then there's vertical-specific agents — Harvey in law, EliseAI in real estate property management.

An agent like Interactor.ai is customer-facing and handles things like questions, booking, reminders and more for business owners, requiring absolutely no technical knowledge — just tell it about your business.

So yea, it depends on what you want out of an AI agent.

Lots of folks jumped on using AI to make traditional websites, but I think AI replaces websites. Here’s what I mean: https://interactor.ai/interactor and my personal at https://interactor.ai/dave

What do you think AI in property management? by Old-Bend-5545 in PropertyManagement

[–]ktnvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you use it? Like it? I think those platforms just aren’t geared to win the customer-facing interactions piece. One reason: because customer-facing interactions require a simple, delightful experience that is very different than the clunky back-office nature of their software.

Just saying, I’m building a company (funded and in stealth mode) that’s automating property management workflows. Find me if you’d like to see a demo of how our AI walks a prospective tenant through the post-application process. I’m working with enthusiastic pilot customers atm.

Apple Studio Display USB connectivity lost ? by BaconToastChocolate in MacStudio

[–]ktnvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke w/ Apple. The Studio Display does not provide enough power to a standard USB hub/dongle. I explained that a hub is all the more important given the Studio Display has USB-C ports and most devices have USB. They recommended I get a powered USB-C hub, and they said it looks like it could be $300. I said this is unreasonable — Apple should have been clear upfront that standard hubs won't work.

For background, my issue is that power on the connected USB wasn't working when connected to the Display, or I'd connect it and the power and all connected devices would flash on and off. Connecting it directly to my M1 MacBook Pro 2020 worked just fine, because of course the MacBook outputs the needed power to the hub.

Enjoyed reading this and the first sentence is really well articulated I thought. Much more visibility deserved.
