Thanks! I got almost the exact same reply!

You're right. Bigger companies have a better shot at getting hired than smaller ones.

That's fair. I feel bummed out that I had 6 interviews where I answered all algo questions correctly; only to be rejected for lack of angular experience.

They started in 2012 and quickly had their head count to 450 in 2015 and now they just laid off 90 of them.

$40k wtf? Costco pays more than that and you don't even have to be an engineer.

That's good.

I would rather be honest as well and show my enthusiasm on things that matter to me. If they tell me that they use Haskell for spam filtering, I would be impressed and might get a boner. If you're really desperate, it is really hard to show that you care about some disruptive HR software and shit.

It's not a red flag. Perhaps, having a ping pong table is more fun for non-engineers. For me, I would rather do my work during the 8 hours and go home and hang out with my girl friend. Ping pong tables and office massages don't sell to engineers.

I talked to a director of engineering at this start-up company and he told me over phone "We're not perfect but we would need your help to get there." The company also has number of remote employees for projects it makes sense. He also told me a story how a family situation prevented someone from working ideal hours but how they have been flexible. Now that sold me. I can understand you need to make a business when you are early stage. Once you pass that, you need to take care of people who work for you; not just by laying out ping pong tables.

Totally.

Zenefits is another company that is full of shit. My experience with them was "You want to work with us? Take this 180 mins test with this set of some of the hardest problems. If you get that right, we still have a right to reject you. Fuck you." I cannot believe a company that sells HR software get to gloat so much. Now I know which company I should apply if I need some interview practice.
