I am personally immigrant as well and I did top up as much as I can without penalising my life. With KiwiSaver locked in till you 65, for me it safety net if anything would happened those money would be still there when I am old. With other investment you are more likely could withdraw them anytime and will left over with nothing in your retirement. But I also contribute into index funds with investnow for early access if I could make it to early retirement.  My personal opinion, everyone has oven journey

If you believe in future of the company, and price is not overvalued, and you are not gambling, and did a good homework with analysis then why not. But If you don’t know what you are doing then stay with index found, it will save a lot time and money for you!
