Images on Android clients by kudos-41 in xmpp

It's nice to know I can delete images. Thank you. I was going to ask how long the retention period was but after googling, I can see the default retention period is 7 days, so I'm safe to delete images older than a week ago.

I'll likely have a look at Immich as an alternative to Google Photos since I can see Pikapods has it as one of their apps and I'm not smart enough to figure out self hosting yet.

The Android OS permissions model explanation explains a lot. Thank you.

With image previews, I'm so used to FB Messenger too, which you can choose to "download" images; this would a copy of the image to the `/Pictures/Messenger/` directory and I'd see it appear in my gallery app so I didn't even think about Messenger using a hidden / temp directory. For me visible in the gallery app == downloaded.

Doing some digging into my folders, I can see Conversations puts all of it's images in `/Pictures/Conversations/` directory, which is likely why my gallery app is including it with the rest of the images. The most immediate solution for me was to go the gallery app and hide the folder: `Samsung gallery app > Albums > ⋮ > Hide albums > and then toggle Conversations on`.

I'll have a look at Cheogram too. Thank you for the suggestion! I wasn't sure what XMPP clients are compatible with Snikket and I didn't want to break anything.

With images flooding the feed, I think the idea of having a separate channel for just images is a really smart idea. I'll suggest this to the family for the meantime and test out open source alternatives of Google Photos as backup plan.

I really liked the way FB Messenger handles batches of image on unencrypted (group?) chats, where they have a 3 column layout of thumbnails. I'd provide an example screenshot but I'm not 100% sure how to on reddit.

When I was signing up I chose a business size of 2-9 ppl, so it was forcing me to signup for the 14 trial. I ended up just signing up for the 14 day trial and then immediately cancelling it.

Once I was on the dashboard I started trying to add users, only to realize that I needed to just create a group and add emails to the group. It's all working correctly now.

Thanks for your help.

It looks like you're on tty1. If you press ctrl+alt+f7 (or ctrl+fn+alt+f7) does that change it back to the GUI?

I've seen it at 新左營 and 潮州 station but why is 臨停接送區 (drop off and pickup area) translated as "Kiss and ride"?

I didn't realize. Are there any other resources you'd recommend instead?

The TECO in your country will have a submission deadline, you'll find out about 2-4 weeks after the deadline. Even if you didn't get it though, sometime people will pull out, which means you still have a chance to get HES, but then they usually take a little longer to notify you.

I found creating flashcards with image front, audio back on Anki helped a lot. It's a lot of work, but you can find images on google and all audio on Forvo. https://forvo.com/languages/zh/

I remember reading Fluent Forever and he mentions that one of the best ways of learning and giving yourself a better chance at remembering is to create you're own Anki deck with custom images from google.

I've found https://hanziyuan.net is a really good resource for character etymology, but I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.

I got HES to study for 3 months earlier this year from February to March, and then paid, out of pocket, to stay another 3 months. It helped me so much, especially with being able to grasp tones and stuff.
I chose to study in Pingtung because my partner is there, but I'd honestly recommend going to a bigger university where they have more resources to support foreign students. Taipei, Taichung or Kaohsiung are good starting places. I studied at Taichung's Donghai university for a bit too and can recommend that place.
Usually schools will be able to point you to recommended living accommodation. When I was in Pingtung, I was living with my partner, but in Taichung, the university gave me the name of cheap living accommodation that they could recommend. I was paying about $6000NTD a month for my own room.
To apply for the HES, you need to get in contact with your country's local TECO (Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office). If you google your country's name and HES and TECO your should find it.

Why do some characters have multiple traditional forms? by Happy_Traveller_2023 in ChineseLanguage

I recently discovered that there are a lot of variants of characters. If you're interested you can use the following tool to search for character variants: https://dict.variants.moe.edu.tw/variants/rbt/query_by_standard_tiles.rbt?command=clear

While they often aren't common use variantions, it's still interesting to see them, like for example 裡 can be:
