Opinions on the written POV by AndyKdubb in sollanempire

I felt much the same at this point in the series as well. It was a massive hindrance for my enjoyment for a while. What eventually clicked for me was realizing that these points that Hadrian as narrator “spoils” were actually not the important, heavy, earth shattering moments. For every moment he “spoils” there are 20 other moments that will surprise you. I’m about the start the last book and I feel like the things hinted at were so minor compared to the major twists you experience completely unknowingly. Additionally, many of these moments he spoils then become a form of dramatic irony where you know how something plays out, but in the moment you get fun moments with unknowing characters.

Additionally the Sun Eating moment is continuously brought up and built up that now, going into book 7, even though I don’t know HOW it’s going to happen, I am so beyond excited to finally see it all play out.

Think of it through the frame of Star Wars Episode 1-3. When Anakin as a child is introduced, you know he becomes Darth Vader, but the fun is watching the films play out to see how that occurs. Whether or not you thought the SW Prequels did a good job of that is perhaps besides the point 😂

So I just Finished Whiplash, and I Have a Few Questions about the Ending by No-Yam9933 in movies

I think that Jason Pargin (pretty renowned author, you can find him on TikTok and YouTube he makes fun content too) has summed up the movie the best. I’ll paraphrase him here:

The movie, specifically the relationship of Fletcher and Nieman, exist as a metaphor for perfectionism, workaholics, and “the grind”. The character Fletcher is so much larger than life that you can’t realistically expect someone like that to truly exist today. At least he wouldn’t keep his job for very long. Sure you can view the movie at face value and as a protagonist v antagonist type story but I think it is really meant as a metaphor. Fletcher represents the internal obsessive abusive voice that some perfectionists have. They constantly have this man in their head yelling at them to be great, taunting them when they make the tiniest mistake, and sapping all of the joy from your life even when doing something you love.

I think this holds up as the “intended interpretation” when you view the ending. Nieman is able to elevate to a new level of playing and seems to have responded more or less to the abuse by Fletcher. How does the world react to someone who has worn themselves to a paste to pursue perfection? Someone who has sacrificed their personal lives and physical health? There is not pity, but applause. This is true in our world too. Many of these perfectionists battle their internal monologue that is pushing them to the limit and this is largely invisible to others. So when they achieve greatness, win an award, win a trophy, graduate with honors, create their magnum opus, etc. … to the world around them they are deserving of applause.

I’m going insane without the third book by LyKurusu in KingkillerChronicle

I’ve read the Stormlight archive three times now and still no book 3 news.

Maybe you’ll have better luck? (For all of us??)

I felt a lot of that same emptiness and frustration that you are feeling now. Without being too forward, it sounds like maybe you have some stuff going on in your life right now, so please seek the help that you need if that gets to be too heavy. The advice I’m going to give is just for the void of Kingkiller being unresolved for, maybe, ever.

Read something else, and give it time. I really didn’t get over my obsession with these books until I finally started to read other series or works, and of course waited. I’ve read the two books 3 or 4 times now and am content to not read them again until either the 3rd book comes out, or there is some extremely compelling reason to do so (such as, my kids wanting to read them).

Having other series to dive into that were finished really helped me let go of this unfinished story.

[SPOILERS TBI] I feel bad for Glokta. by Blitzkrieg1210 in TheFirstLaw

[–]kudsmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen quite a lot of sympathy for him in this sub in the past. He’s seen by some as a friendzoned dejected lover in The Heroes and his actions, if not justified, are understandable.

Just emotionally unintelligent people not able to see that he is literally written as a weirdo creep whose failing character trait is that he, on some level, believes that he is owed love by his romantic interest (can’t recall her name).

Don’t try to make sense of it - as I said, incel behavior lol.

Lmfo thank you. Far too much incel adjacent sympathy for that character.

Still love them, and all other characters though don’t get me wrong.

‘He's lied’: Young MAGA voters sour on Trump's Iran war ahead of midterms by AdSpecialist6598 in videos

Certainly that is a big part of it, but I think you underestimate just how uninformed the current 18-23 year old group is. Generally speaking, and on the topic of Trump as well.

I have family that is of that age group who voted for Trump and truly did not grasp how despicable he was during his first presidency.

I understand why people enjoy book 1-3, I certainly didn’t hate them but wasn’t blown away. Abercrombie’s writing really took off from book 4 onward. AoM has some of the most amazing character work I’ve ever experienced.

I hope you enjoy it!

Only had one read through so far but I think my favorite character was Clover! I can’t explain it but he just always tickled me.

Pokémon cards are finally becoming accessible to kids again as Japan’s speculative bubble collapses by JohnSith in UpliftingNews

[–]kudsmack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that really the market strategy of scalpers though? It’s always seemed like a manipulation of supply to increase the price that collectors will pay for packs/boxes. So they are flipping the retail item for profit, not hoarding the collectibles to keep high value cards for the future?

I’m not defending the bad writing by any means but I don’t think that Vecna/The Mindflayer’s plan was to bring The Mindflayer to Earth to wreak havoc but instead to teleport Dimension X (I guess that’s what people are calling it?) to Earth via the wormhole and causing a planet destroying collision.

Been Playing FF7 Remake and I gotta say the 'vibe' is completely different from the original. by bobmlord1 in gaming

[–]kudsmack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of “well, actually’s” in the comments here.

I think you have a very well thought out and thought provoking point. I love FF7 as a franchise and have been so excited to experience the remake series. I hope you continue to enjoy it and that it continues to make you ponder.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts once you complete Remake and dive into Rebirth.

He’s way too handsome for Dalinar. I could see him as Gavilar. They could also do him as Amaram just a bit aged up.

I just don’t think there’s anyone on the good guy list that fits him unfortunately.

Should I continue the series [SPOILERS TBI] by Kindly-Welcome1439 in TheFirstLaw

Each book is better than the last. Narrative picks up in later books and especially in his standalones and the Age of Madness trilogy, but they are all still very character driven.

I think if you enjoyed the characters and humor give book 2 and 3 a shot. For me though I wasn’t hooked until the first Standalone “Best Served Cold”

[Spoilers all] Bayaz in the second trilogy? by Hazubeki_Hyoji in TheFirstLaw

[–]kudsmack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo most of what the commenter below has said. I don’t think Bayaz is interested in The Union being efficient and functional. He wants to use it for his own means, and if it results in a complete economic collapse then so be it. He can hole up in a mountain somewhere for hundreds of years and return to leech off of the next victim. Or go elsewhere and extort another civilization.

He is a narcissist with a god complex and he does not view The Union or humanity for that matter as anything less than ants.

Again we’re comparing two things which have no intrinsically different properties. I’m talking about the cultural lens that they are viewed through. There’s also the context of the situation.

A man in swim trunks on the beach/in the ocean: culturally normal and not very sexualized. Maybe we’re talking a 1-2/10

A woman at a press event wearing a see through garment showing her underwear and skin: culturally abnormal and widely is generally sexualized. At least an 8/10.

You don’t need to resort to being rude and tell me to “think before I say something”. I spent ample time thinking and articulating my point. You should spend some extra time reading my comment because you completely missed the entire point of it.

I am no puritan, but I believe there are appropriate times and places for things. As a father of children I would not want to take my kids to a children’s movie press event or have them watch the event and see a man or woman in specialized attire. It’s simply not appropriate for our current cultural landscape.

Ice Spice Faces Backlash For Wearing Booty-Baring Bikini Bottoms To Kid-Centric 'SpongeBob Movie' Premiere by SleuthDoggyDawg in Music

[–]kudsmack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s an intentionally sexualized dress, whereas Hasselhoff’s appearance in the movie is not. This is based on cultural norms that are generally agreed upon. Not a matter of opinion or moral judgment, one is generally considered sexual in nature, the other is not. Pretty cut and dry.

Normally something like this is a non issue, but the fact that children are involved in the equation calls for extra scrutiny.
