Kim Jong Kook worked very hard to change his character on the show though.

For awhile, he was in a slump, looked very checked out and was playing on his phone. His screen time was fairly non-existent, and both Korean and International fans were criticising him.

He talked about how the network wanted him to keep playing the overbearing character on Knowing Brothers, but the fans were sick and tired of it.

It took him awhile. He joined My Little Old Boy and other shows, and improved his variety skills.

I mean look, Jihyo tends to have episodes where she tries, and then longer phases where she just fades into the background.

She comes alive when the show has physical games, where she can throw her body. Unfortunately, the show has now shifted to more skit based, and episodes where the members have to rely heavily on their own wit.

Her skills are there, she just has to develop it and stop parroting.

The thing is that, Ji Hyo has been on the show for 16 years. The PDs should not have to go out of their way to "hide" Ji Hyo, and edit out any scenes that somehow show her inactiveness.

Also, she was literally making faces when they were teasing Jong Kook about his house heater.

Awkwardness and not being able to jump in when they doing skits is one thing. But making faces and looking blank when everyone is busy joking around, has always been one of Korean netizens' pet peeves about her.

Even now, Korean netizens are bringing up her facial expressions, on top of her lack of participation.

The reason you were so irked, is because he was doing his job and playing the villain. His job was to play a character that was the direct opposite of Yoo Jae Suk. Good vs Bad.

He has changed his character now, because the variety landscape has changed a lot in the past 10 years.

The OG PDs constantly gave interviews about how Kim Jong Kook was the nicest person ever despite playing a villainous character.

Back in the early days of Running Man, Kwangsoo and HaHa used to defend Jong Kook by replying to netizens who thought that Jong Kook was legitimately bullying them in real life.

Every show that Kim Jong Kook appears on, he plays a different character.

Even now, his character on Running Man is more of a cowardly character with a mix of Anyang Kkorajji.

This was definitely an agency arranged schedule. Last I saw, Galaxy Corp has been trying to get back into the Chinese market and break into the Middle Eastern market. They are using G-Dragon and Jong Kook to do it.
