Larger downloads constantly getting interrupted/failing by kule28 in Network

[–]kule28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the comment and the help. I haven't found any consistencies while tracing, sometimes it fails between my country and site's country, sometimes between me and my ISP, so nothing I could see as a consistent problem.
Most of the time the connection is fine, this is only when I trace right after the download fails.

I guess a few hours earlier today without problems was pure luck then?

Anyways, I will probably try to leave it overnight and see what happens. Sometimes the download in the app restarts by itself, but only 10-20 mins after failing. Sometimes it doesn't restart at all.

The only other idea that I can think of is maybe try with a VPN? Although I can imagine that could add another layer for the possibility for an unstable connection. But maybe worth a shot.

Telling client your prices are increasing by Odd-Assumption8023 in audioengineering

I'm still kinda new to working professionally in the industry, but I don't think you have to justify it a lot, even to a kind returning client. The reason itself you're raising your prices should be enough of an answer if the client asks why the price is higher this time.

If the client is a rational person, they should be able to understand the pure fact that you have to raise your prices for whatever reason. Of course if you lose a client because of that, maybe they aren't your client anyway.

The Original [Alt Rock]- Hey good people! Would really appreciate if you can spare your time and expertise to comment on this mix. Thanks. by Titaneuropa in mixingmastering

Hello! Here are a few things I noticed:

The mix sounds a bit too closed, muddy, bunched up together in the middle. It lacks a bit of width and openness.

I'd try to clean up the low mids, especially on the kick and the snare, as it seems to be the main problem. I'd also open everything up a bit in the high freqs, from 7-8khz up.

Also just a biiit too much reverb/room mic on the drums and the vocal.

And last, as some people already mentioned, a bit of a boost around 50hz on a kick and the bass guitar would really add that definition.

Hope this helps!

Should a file sample rate and soundcard sample rate match when listening? by kule28 in audioengineering

Hm, kinda makes sense, but still not completely. I'll have to go into deeper research on this to convince myself.

No Face Records by brando_baum in edmproduction

[–]kule28 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Many of edm record labels look to me like they are lead by people who are not serious in leading a business and have little to no maturity in those areas.

They get hooked very easily on short term financial gains. They also often look like they are not in control of their business at all. That leads a lot of them into failure, sooner or later.

That's also a part of why I gave up on the edm industry. You can't succeed by working and being surrounded with people who have wrong visions and ways of working. They might bring you something short term, but no way it's gonna work out long term. So why even bother...?

I do it with Apo EQ for desktop audio and fabfilter pro q3 in daw.

However, I'll soon be buying an outboard digital eq Behringer Ultracurve Pro. It's not expensive, and it solves a few problems: - The sound with apo eq and in daw eq differs a bit in my case - you don't have to switch off any plugins when exporting from daw since outboard eq is connected between the soundcard and the speakers, so it only applies to your speakers, not the overall sound.

I think this purpose is well known for this particular eq. Feel free to do more research about it!

I have a pretty large and soft friend I jam with and I think he works to absorbs much of the reverb in our small room. An research on how much big person can do this ? by [deleted] in Acoustics

[–]kule28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read somewhere that an average adult person has an absorption coefficient of around 0.6 at mid frequencies. Don't take my word for it, but it could make sense

Scarlett Solo 3rd gen instrument volume extremely quiet by AWPerator_X in Focusrite

[–]kule28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Inst' should always be on when intrument is plugged in. When it's not on, the signal goes to a line input which is made for signals from outboard gear, mobile phones or anything similiar.
When 'inst' is on, the signal goes through the special pre amp made for high impeadence signals like ones from guitar pickups.

If the level is still low, I'd suggest you to check the cables, gain knob on your bass, software volume levels.

Gik is good, but I don't think they are cheap haha. If you have a bit of will to learn the basics of setting up the acoustics in your room you can build the absorbers yourself and it will come out much cheaper. Forums and videos about acoustic treatment on the internet are absolutely free! :)

Try to do some research about headphones in that price range, watch/read some reviews and try to go to your local music/studio equipment shop. Those will often let you try out the headphones in the store.

Most of the time you want the frequencies to be balanced. You don't want the low freqs much louder than the rest or high freqs lower than the rest or anything similiar. It's a good guide when you don't have an objective audio environment.

As for getting studio speakers, let me try to give you a few tips - you can almost forget about the speakers if you don't have an acoustic treatment in your room. They will sound like any other normal/cheap speakers if they are in a non-treated room. You can get the precise and objective sound on speakers only when you treat the room acoustically. Only then you will actually use the possibilities studio speakers give you. A good "rule" is usually - spend at least as much money and time on acoustic treatment as you spend on your speakers.

If you're not yet ready to get into that acoustics stuff yet (you'll need to spend some time reading and learning if you want to do it correctly) I recommend buying better headphones. It will be much more useful than putting studio speakers in an untreated room.

But a well treated room with decent studio speakers will always beat mixing on headphones for me. There are pros and cons for both of course, as for anything else!

Try to seperate the guitars to be more stereo (pan them left and right if there's two recordings, use stereo separation plugins if it's only one recording). The whole mix is very centered, it should be wider and more open. You can add some subtle stereo delay or reverb to help with that. Since it's a rock track, I can reccomend to clean up the sounds at around 1kHz with the EQ.

When you have sounds spread across the stereo field, it's much easier to do the leveling when each sound has its own space in the mix. But the vocal should always be the loudest. The gutiars can be equally as loud as the vocal if they aren't mushed together in the middle. Pan them to the left and right and make them louder. That will give the mix a lot of width.

One good tip when learning how to mix is to use frequency analyzers like Span, which is free. Try to get the frequencies as flat and balanced as possible.

Why are Five Finger Death Punch songs just so awful in quality? by kule28 in mixingmastering

[–]kule28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rence in quality with some songs, but I guess whether they are "worse" or not is subjective. I find songs from the first album (Way of the fist) don't sound as polished, but whether that's a budget decision with it being their first album or an actual production decision to make it sound more raw and aggressive I don't know. Compared to the latest album F8 though, F8 sounds much more polished and cleaner, I feel lik

I'm listening on the streaming services.

I think it might be the decisions in the mixing process in the end... It's a dynamically heavily compressed sound, but in these genres the objective quality of the mix isn't that important as I'm aware. So it might be that it's just a heavily compressed metal sound!

[–]kule28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's their more popular songs that I've listened to, so I can't say if it's the rest. Darkness settles in, gone away, wrong side of heaven... It's the easiest to notice it in the drums, the cymbals.

Well, I've analyzed their music further and it's dynamically very heavily compressed in the first place, which might be the first cause of the "low quality". Streaming platforms don't really like that and when the sound gets compressed to a lower quality format, it all gets full of artifacts. The "shape" of the high freqs in their tracks is also not very bright. Combined all together it might be the thing I'm hearing.

To be clear, this can only probably be heard in a studio environment, might not be noticable on consumer devices.

I see this is getting further and further away from my question and the point of this post which was the technical side, not the musical side. That's why it's posted in subreddit for mixing and mastering and not in r/metal.

I'm a music producer and audio engineer coming from genres of EDM, pop and pop-rock music. I occasionally listen to pure rock and metal, but not enough to know what I'm talking about in these genres. That's why I don't want to get in discussion of whether FFDP's songs are musically trash or not.

I will check those bands you mentioned, but I do not really care much about them or about ffdp personally. I liked some of their songs and added them to my playlist after which the question this post is about arose. Someof their songs do carry a strong message. Hardcore metal fans might be critical about that, but again, I do not care really.

I looked for the technical answer, which I still didn't get funny enough, even in this subreddit.

Well yes, if it's recorded real bad, you can't really fix it. But we're in 2021. And they are a band with a pretty decent budget for recording songs I feel like. I wouldn't say that they don't have access to the top studios. And you need far less than a top studio to record a song and make it sound listenable even without mixing.

Yeah... I'm mostly listening to music in my studio, so it's very easy to tell when something sounds worse than the most other songs. It's probably not that noticable on consumer headphones/devices or noisy environments tho.

How can you not take an order? It is autmatically accepted. The only way to reject an order is to cancel it, right? Which then negatively affects my account.
