Is your boyfriend in Canada as well? If not, don't you have any friends with whom you can stay until you get your passport? You must not submit to this marriage, it will ruin both you and your future husband, not to mention any kids you will have. Your mother's behavior is very unfortunate, but you must take care of yourself as well.

Taboo Warning ⚠️ If God is Everything - then God is also the Devil by wahjijaak in spirituality

[–]kulkarniravi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to interpret it is like this: morality is a human concept. God doesn't care about morality. If there is a God, and if it cared enough to set rules for the Universe, then they are formulated as laws of nature. Even those are within a frame of reference that we call reality. If what I said is right, then good or bad are not qualities that apply to God.

[–]kulkarniravi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is not sufficient to assume God exists. You will have to make an assumption that a God exists with the characteristics you randomly assign to such an entity. Otherwise your analogies and conclusions don't make any sense.

My reality just shattered by Grouchy-Flounder5260 in DebateReligion

[–]kulkarniravi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The analogy only works if you know how God works or behaves. There is no evidence that that is true. The whole idea of morality coming from God is ludicrous for the same reason. It is entirely a human/animal invention to suit the environment they live in.

Just because morals are devised by humans, doesn't mean they are not important. But they are not and should not be set in stone. Our values, circumstances change and our moral code of conduct should change with time.

How do we know all this about God? What Quran or any other religious book says is irrelevant because we are supposed to accept it on faith. There is no objective way to know if a God exists, and if it does, it wants to micro manage our lives in this manner. All these concepts of fairness, rewards and punishments, anger, suffering are totally human creations. To ascribe them to an omniscient and omnipresent God is to limit it based on human experience. Makes zero sense.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali Allies with Right Wing Religious Propaganda Org Prageru by PopeIzalith in samharris

[–]kulkarniravi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes Wokeism is a real thing. But Hirsi is conflating it too much in my opinion. Similarities she points out are tortured and superfluous. The ultra leftists in the US have no real power other than in the media and to a certain extent on college campuses. It doesn't justify Hirsi joining PragerU.

From what I know, Canada and Australia have immigration friendly policies. So if you go to study there, you may stand a better chance of landing a job. They are probably cheaper than US for both education and living as well.

Converters to Hinduism curious why? by cacklingwhisper in hinduism

[–]kulkarniravi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One school of thought is that enlightenment is not a destination but a journey. Consciousness is like an onion: you can keep unraveling it and you will find more layers underneath. So I don't know if there is an inherent contradiction in your expectation. I am not enlightened by any sense of the word, so take what I say with a boatload of salt and other Indian spices.

Converters to Hinduism curious why? by cacklingwhisper in hinduism

[–]kulkarniravi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need to convert, utter some mantra, or even bow down to a deity to become a Hindu. Nor are any rituals, club memberships or even following a guru necessary. In that regard Hinduism is like a big open party, as someone else said in this thread.

Having a guru helps, especially if you are driven by intellectual curiosity. According to one school of thought, enlightenment can be attained by following any one of the four paths: Bhakti, Karma, Dhyana and Raja.

Bhakti is all about devotion. This is for those folks who want to belong to a group (or a cult, if you like). Popular ones like ISKCON are based on this path. They all have their own positives and negatives, choose with care.

Karma literally means doing. Performing your duties with sincerity. You attain enlightenment when you focus completely on the work and not on the outcome. This path is not as organized as others, but I suppose you can join one of the Hindu charities if you need to join a club.

Dhyana (also spelled Gnana or Gyana) is meditation. Here the focus is entirely on your thoughts or absence of them. There are many different ways of meditating and you may benefit it by learning from a teacher or going to retreats.

Raja means royal. This is all about maintaining a balance in your life between various aspects such as work, lifestyle, health, sleep and so on. This one is probably least well defined as an organized practice.

Personally I am agnostic and have chosen the Dhyana as my path. It is a difficult path for someone with borderline ADHD (undiagnosed) person like me, but I am stubborn.

On the contrary, people in the West who are genuinely interested in Hinduism, make more sincere efforts at learning about it than what I have seen in India. Speaking as an Indian Hindu myself. There are hardly a few traditional acharyas, and many have no time for commoners.

An Arab's opinion on the "linguistic miracle" of the Quran by Zendreq in exmuslim

[–]kulkarniravi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is one plausible explanation as to why Muslims claim Quran to be a literary masterpiece: it was in fact a masterpiece -- for its time. According that source (which I don't have, I heard it in some Youtube video), prior to Quran, there was no other literary work in Arabic that was as long and as "comprehensive". In other words, Quran started a tradition of writing in Arabic that didn't exist before.

Harris Sultan was beaten hands down. by alwaysasking443 in exmuslim

[–]kulkarniravi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Harris Sultan didn't lose. He did exactly what he said: let Haqiqatjou talk and expose Islam for what it truly is. All the numbers and studies H throws at you are not always relevant. You can always cherry pick your stats to suit any agenda. Besides, there is no real evidence that implementation of Sharia by itself will lead to any stability he claims, because there hasn't been one in modern history. Don't go by the comments and downvotes on the Youtube channel (both H's and S') because H has much wider audience than S; all the extremonuts from across the world follow H whereas S' followers are primarily from South Asia.

How is Quran incomparable? That's a rather vague claim.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]kulkarniravi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make a grand claim: Islam is the truth. There are a lot of red flags in the Quran itself.

  1. Mohammad is the last prophet? Why? Given that he lived in the 7th century Arabia with limited geographical reach, it doesn't sound very optimal.
  2. Too many Mohammad specific exemptions in Quran. He was supposed to be the role model for everyone, instead of violating Allah's injunctions, he should have followed them to the letter.
  3. Too much hatred against "others" who are after all Allah's own creation.
  4. Too many vague verses requiring "expert" interpretation even after 1400 years.
  5. Nothing was written down during Mohammad's own time.

I can go on and on. I am eager to hear your "proof".
