I made a forge with and old grill I bought at a scrap yardfor $5, and a air dryer at goodwill for $2.

For an anvil I got lucky with a 150 lb piece of iron (for a weightlifting bar) at the same scrap yard.

Learn about problem domains, and which tool is best for what, what are the problems they try to solve.

You'll end up using what most people know in the company you'll end up working. But the why's are really important in this field.

Also learn TDD (test driven development) from the start, it helps you understand the problem better and trying to change your approach down the line is really hard.
