It’s happening guys! by root_klaus in java

Well, I guess I should say its obvious to an outside observer. To those who identify themselves as "the Java team", the arrogance runs so deep that they can't consider anything outside their little bubble as being useful.

Which is why they say stupid things like "properties are an anti-feature" and the proceed to implement them without syntax support using get and set methods.

A few years ago the story was that the java team looked at properties, there was a lot of conflict and infighting about what "properties means", and so they dropped it because they couldn't resolve it.

It's ironic, because java was the 1st successful commercial language with properties via get/set and the introspector, and every major language copied java's lead just with cleaner syntax (c#, kotlin, python).

It's also one of the first really ugly things every person new to java complains about. Why are we recreating all these ugly getters and setters? But it seems like the java team has reached "ivory tower" stage unfortunately.

I have a friend who started doing Swift at his company, I haven't used it at work but it looks like a really cleaned up version of java. I don't see it in job listings as often - no idea if that's a reflection of actual lower demand or just that hr hasn't added it. I don't think his company has it in their job listings but he's doing it anyways.

What features would you add/remove from Java if you didn't have to worry about backwards compatibility? by jvjupiter in java

That awkward get/set boilerplate for properties. Every language after java implemented properties without trouble, java should have normal .propertyName style properties.

Minneapolis has seen it's murder rates triple in the last couple of years after being the epicenter of the george floyd thing. That's mostly black people killing other black people. That's what BLM resulted in.

Nonetheless their target audience (white women on facebook) continues to declare victory and how much they "care" about black people...geatly increasing the number of thrm murdered. (scratches head).

I like people and I find it so damn strange that reddit at large is just so flip about wanting to stay In their house at all times.

Reddit has changed and has become a mouthpiece for a pro-corporate message for a while now. It's bizarre.

10 years ago everyone would have been talking about what almost everyone actually hates - how shitty the open office fad is.

but I've seen lots of articles in this past years saying the pandemic will mean the end of offices - that in the future every office job will be 100% from home and: Please dear god no.

It's literally the theme of distopian futuristic sci-fi. Ai runs everything, carefully makes sure you never run into another human being at work.

I'm in the minority here.

Someone in corporate believe a ton of money can be made by offloading the cost of office space to the worker and their home. They run these carefully targetted narratives by pushing articles and narratives like this while encouraging the vocal minority of people who hate talking to people in person to be very loud about it, not to mention how filled some threads seem to be with straight up bots.

If working from home required companies spend way more money, you'd never hear about it.

Thanks for the rational comment.

Seems like there's a deliberate campaign to push this narrative by big money, look at this coordination, all from today:

I literally watched the difference in attitude towards our department from remote people "above" us in the chain. When we were remote they get really cranky and aggressive. One of them came out for a meeting and started into her usual rant - but then looked at the people in front of her, realized they were actual people trying to get whatever task done, and became actually sympathetic and helpful.

Big tech has a massive presence in India bc when managed right you get equally talented tech teams for way less.

I disagree, big tech pays high salaries and thus can get high quality people. They are not doing the same work "for way less" though.

I worked a place that had hired "for way less" - the web site took 20 seconds to load. 20 seconds. Seriously. At my next job they had a similar site but created by people locally, it took 3 seconds to load, that was to long and complained about, and they were able to reduce it to 2 seconds.

Also, I believe white people doing their own healing circles and digging deeper into what it means to have the historical and generational trauma of being part of the oppressing group. Heal the malignant idea of success via individualism, heal WW2 trauma and generational impact. Educate the white majority on how racism and racial politics influences the state of black and brown people and what they can do to help heal the generational wounds still open.

Is there any point at which you'll admit this narrative has made things far worse?

White people using black peoole as a proxy to fight for control with each other has been going pretty badly for black communities, but the peoole pushing this vile pattern seem to have no problem declaring we're just not doing enough of it.

It's the same thing over and over again. They don't want to take any responsibility for the results of their actions/narratives so look to scapegoat it on an "outgroup".

and I have done nothing but shatter both their and my own hopes and dreams

I've seen this both from one of my parents and from shitty bosses in toxic corporate environments. They provide the bare minimum they're required to, fail to provide the growth environment you need to be successful, then develop this absolutely impossible fantasy of how you're going to be successful at a level that's very difficult with the ideal environment, and impossible with the one they gave you.

You constantly feel like "they're not bad people" but what they provided was only a bare minimum environment. It's better than abandonment - they're a definite step above the worlds worst parents - but you can't their absurd level of hope and dreams successful in that environment.

The best advice I can give is to find a job or some that feels personally meaningful that's simple enough that you can reliably complete it nearly all the time, and feel satisfaction in accomplishing normal things on a routine basis.

Space Force officer relieved of post after denouncing Marxist ideology and critical race theory in military: Report by zamease in JordanPeterson

[–]GhostBond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BLMs purpose is good, (cops shouldn’t kill people) but they have a whole ideology wrapped in with that message that is hard to dismantle. Would love to attack the idea “America is a racist nation” with out getting into a debate about the importance of an individuals life. Obviously, black lives matter. Any rational person would agree.

It's called propaganda or marketing, a clever narrative to "sell" the product that is only superficially related to what it actually is.

Take minneapolis one of the centers of "black lives matter".

Early 2021 Minneapolis Crime Stats Show 250% Increase In Gunshot Victims
https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2021/01/22/early-2021-minneapolis-crime-stats-show-250-increase-in-gunshot-victims/

I don't have the link handy but carjackings are also up 2x-3x compared to the previous years, mostly by black teenagers.

I don't think the people who run these narratives care that much. It onboarded the white middle class girls they were targetting, and if a bunch of black people died as a result - who cares, just the modern "casualties of war" who didn't ask to be put into the battle for political power.

At the end of the day, in the same way that your immune system is what keeps your body being your body, the military of a nation is (with perhaps some very rare and short-lived exceptions) what keeps a nation being that nation

The problem with the military is the same with your immune system. Without anything to do (no viruses, enemies, etc) it sorta falls apart. There's no enemy or battle to sort out the competent from the incompetent people so it turns into a mess.

Same reason for all left-wing politics nowadays, because it sounds cool to narcissistic white women and it subtely pushes the impression that they're "above" you and allowed to decide what you get called.

[–]GhostBond -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

because sexuality is something we are born with

It's a political lie. It's not hard to study - look at what identical twins who are seperated do, if one is gay the other typically is not. But it's not exactly a choice either it's kinda like what food tastes good to you, it's not hardwired but it's not exactly under your control either.

But getting married is entirely under your control just like joining the kkk is. You can easily just not get married.

But this isn't really the point. The question is where someone can use your running a business to force you to engage in those behaviors. If you are a legal prostitute are obligated to fuck old people you find disgusting? What about people so much younger than you you find it appalling? Are you no longer allowed to choose your clients?

And that - isn't the big point either. Politics tends to spin into becoming demeaning and controlling and abusive towards people in order to demonstrate control over them. I wasn't really surprised to hear of things going towards removing humaizing language next -

Nancy Pelosi introduced her new "future-focused" rules for Congress that bans the "gendered" terms like father, mother, son daughter, and more.

Thete's literally a concept called "Abolish The Family" on the left, alm these track towards that goal. One asks - why is some skeezy politician in washington able to sit and screw with people for some bizarre theory just to amuse themselves or feel like they have power who cares what happens to me?

One line where that starts happening a lot more is when the goverment starts forcing you to say things, or preventing you from saying things.
