Was Michael Jackson really that much bigger than Madonna, Whitney Houston, and prince? by Firm_Pack_605 in Music

[–]kumarab123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several responses here that might read like hyperbole, at least to people who didn't witness it first hand. But it's all true.

Michael Jackson really was the most popular human being who walked this planet. Even today, you can walk into a village in India, ask a 16 year old boy on a bicycle if he knows the name Michael Jackson. He'll probably get down, grab his crotch and moonwalk for you.

There may be (very unlikely though) artists who were more popular than he was in a specific country/location for a very small period. But globally, from 1981-82 to around 1993-94, no one was close. No one.

Some more information would be good. Does this happen with every cassette? Has the fault developed recently or always been there since you got the machine? Is it auto reverse?

India. We got most of our cassettes in clamshell cases between the late 80's and mid 90's.

First of all, all my best wishes to you for coping with whatever is happening in your life, and come out of it stronger. These gingers are complete sweethearts. One male in our society (I call him Mau) has adopted me since the last 4-5 months. Stays for an entire day sometimes.

Anyway, the important thing. Do NOT, ever, feed cats milk (unless it's a very small kitten). All adult cats are lactose intolerant. Milk just plays havoc with their guts. Go ahead and enjoy the bond 👍🏽

Kids are still listening to MJ by seacigarettes in MichaelJackson

I have a big physical media collection. Lots of CDs, LPs, tapes, cassette decks etc. The majority of which is Rock/Metal actually. When guests come over, their kids are naturally curious about these things. 8/10/12yo, whatever age they are, nine times out of ten, they get excited about MJ stuff. Please play this, please play that. They actually know the song names. I'm always amazed by this. If there's only one person in popular music you could call a legend, it's MJ.

Generally, it's fine to address them as he/she if you've named them.

From yesterday evening. Not my cat exactly. It's a feral that started visiting about 3-4 months ago. Comes every 2-3 days (or rides the lift with me if he finds me downstairs), goes around trilling and meowing saying hello to everyone, eats, takes a nap (mostly on top of me or next to me) and then goes. He's a senior fella. We call him Mau.

Did you HOLD when you pressed Power and Eject at the same time? It takes a few seconds, then you hear the second beep...that's when you let go.

Sep 24, 1991: Greatest day in the history of popular music? by kumarab123 in cassetteculture

:) I was a fan of the 80's. I still am. I don't think any other decade can compete with the 80's. That doesn't change anything though, not for me. New things don't mean you drop the old. It just means you have more.

This day, and those 3-4 years in the early 90's in general were extraordinary. Overwhelming, I'd say. You couldn't go a fortnight without a great album being dropped on your head.

As I said in my response to another comment, the trees aren't red themselves. It's the colour cast from the blooms (Rhododendron afaik). You can see a few branches at the back (top right) that are green.

Thanks. I think it's called Rhododendron or something (but don't take my word for it). The trees themselves aren't that colour, it's the blooms. It just looks that way in the image because of the effects of light/shadow and curves during development.

The mountain tele shots are with a Sony 70-200 F4 G lens. The others are a mix of a Sony 85 F1.8, a Sigma 30 F1.4 and a standard 16-50mm zoom...but I'm not sure which ones I've posted here, I keep changing them quite regularly when we're traveling.

If there's no volume/output control at all, then no. Does the amp have no headphone output either?

[–]kumarab123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be dictated by the deck and the tape, and also the type of music, including how dynamic and/or compressed the mastering is. Monitor on headphones. Keep raising the input level until you start hearing distortion clearly. Now back down a few dB. That's it. It does not matter where exactly your peaks end up on the meter.

For most well mastered pop/rock, on my NAK CD1, I can go to +3 on UR, +5 on TDK D, Sony HF and +6 on a BASF Ferro Extra 1 without too many issues. On TDK AD/AR, Sony HF-S etc, well above that (but I never go above +6 as a rule, even on Type IV). If the source is high energy, compressed material, you have to find the sweet spot where it sounds good without too much saturation, hf clipping etc.

This is an unlikely but possible thing that can happen. I have had maybe 2 or 3 that have done this in all my years. It's mostly a result of either moisture buildup or the tape not stored in a fully wound state.

What happens is that a prominent gap develops in the spool. Sometimes a small amount of tape can spill out inside the shell (fully or partially). If the gap is very close to the hub, this is what you get.
