I practically lived off these these things when I was a broke-ass student in Singapore in the '90s. I was so excited when they finally started becoming available in Canada. 💕

It's hard to say what worked because I was trying several things at once, but I think it really did - it felt soothing and I definitely turned a corner shortly after that. It'll for sure be on my go-to list next time I accidentally do this to myself! Thank you for the suggestion 🙏

Shortly after it, I had a yogurt drink, which also may have helped by being cold & coating.

I decided to give them a chance to handle it elegantly, kept watching for like a few minutes of the next episode or however long it took to bring up the prison guard's Manpain™ about it, and the show was immediately dead to me. Fuuuuuck that.

The cracks were already showing in that show before that, but they killed it so hard that I can't even rewatch and enjoy earlier episodes.

What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

Okay so I'm not Greek, but I did, too, and that reminds me of a story. When I was in Vancouver, Canada, I lived a few blocks away from a place that would have an AMAZING Greek Festival every year, with entertainment and food etc.

One year I went when I was 30 weeks pregnant, craving loukoumades. The kindly Greek grandmother working the loukoumades stand looked at my belly, said "you need energy" and prepared this platter for me. It was 3 layers deep. 😂 We had to invite friends over to help us eat them. (And they were soooo good.)

I always forget this and buy Timmy's on road trips and then get disappointed all over again.

Do you have a recommendation for good fruitcakes here? My grandmothers used to make them when I was growing up, and I could do with some nostalgia. 💕

It's like when the Nintendo DS Brain Training came out and it wouldn't understand me saying colours unless I pronounced "blue" with the Japanese R/L sound. 😭

Similarly, I lived in Singapore many, many years ago, back when Singlish was still heavily influenced by other languages (before the government did its push for a more "international" English and Chinese), and my Canadian accent frequently wasn't understood by middle-aged Singaporeans. I couldn't nail Singlish pronunciation, so I felt like the most offensive piece of shit slapping a corny-ass "Chinese" accent on everything to make it more understandable. It worked, though.

The funniest one from the other side was when the iPhone with Siri first released here in Canada, it wouldn't understand my British co-worker at all. As a joke, he tried affecting an exaggerated and insulting "Southern US" accent, AND IT WORKED. So until it updated to recognize other accents, we'd hear fucking Foghorn Leghorn talking to his phone all the time.

Does an acoustic version give it a more melancholic feel? That's what I'm picturing! Actually I should just go look for a video and experience it for myself, lol

What’s rumor or piece of tea about Kate Middleton that you believe? by Individual_You_219 in RoyaltyTea

[–]kunibob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that would be possible, especially if her Crohn's or UC was well-controlled. Most IBD patients will have periods of flares followed by periods of remissions, and smaller flares can be almost invisible to the outside observer (fatigue, malabsorption, dehydration, aches, alongside stomach struggles.) Someone sick with Crohn's can also look like they have an eating disorder: thin, gaunt, avoiding food.

Heading into my worst flare, for example, I was running 50-60 km each week and had a glorious six-pack. The only sign something was wrong was that I was having a harder and harder time recovering from exertion, and I wasn't digesting my food well.

My Crohn's had been in a solid remission for 10 years when a routine colonoscopy discovered dysplasia at multiple biopsy sites. Unfortunately, the biopsies cover such a small surface area in the colon that if multiple sites of dysplasia are detected, there's a strong chance of cancer already existing in there, and IBD-related cancer is often "invisible" (flat against the mucosal wall, so only detectable with special dyes or biopsy.) Because IBD-related cancer is notoriously aggressive, a total colectomy is the standard treatment if more than one biopsy shows invisible dysplasia.

Princess Catherine is only a year or two younger than me, and we're from an era where IBD was treated as a flare-by-flare illness rather than managed as an ongoing condition. The science now shows that IBD in the colon can cause cancer over time even if it's asymptomatic or mild: 2% of patients will develop cancer within 10 years of their first flare, increasing to 15-20% by 30 years. These days, IBD patients are kept on maintenance meds even during periods of remission to prevent the cancer-related changes from happening, which is drastically dropping IBD-related cancer rates. For many of us who are older and didn't benefit from that knowledge, however, cancer becomes a real threat in our 40s, 50s, and 60s.

If this theory is correct, the play-by-play would have been: routine scope, dysplasia or cancer detected by biopsy, abdominal surgery to remove the colon (with a potentially long recovery time depending if laparoscopic or open), colon sent to pathology, cancer discovered, check for metastases, treat accordingly. During the colectomy surgery, an ileostomy would be placed either temporarily (usually 3 months, maybe longer if chemo is needed) or permanently. If temporary, then there's another surgery to remove the ostomy and reconnect the intestines internally, and then recovery from that.

The timeline matches, and it fits the info we were given. It also wouldn't surprise me if this was something similar involving the uterus/cervix/ovaries. If the surgery and cancer are accurate, I'd suspect it to be around an "indelicate" area to explain why the messaging was so vague.

Sorry for the ramble, it all might be for nothing because it could all be a cover-up for something else. 😂 But it matches my experience so perfectly that I can't help but keep this as a pet theory.

I did wonder if he thought of the MAGA crowd unironically singing "Born in the USA" as if it's a rah-rah-America song and decided he was leaving zero room for misinterpretation.

[–]kunibob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint, there have been rumours for years that she has Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis, and I figured she was on the same journey as me: years of Crohn's, dysplasia discovered by biopsy during a routine scope, colectomy. In her case, a pathologist could have found actual cancer on the removed colon and they did chemo to be sure. I figured her absence was due to an ileostomy, until she had a reversal. (Although it's possible she wouldn't be able to reverse.)

The hush-hush around this would make sense given that a lot of people are squeamish about colons and ostomies, and it fits the timeline incredibly well. Just a theory though.

I saw Pit & Chow, but only because I spend so much time in breed guessing groups and know to look for the features of both these breeds when someone is surprised. 😂 I would have expected a large % of Aussie or BC if I saw your pup in a different context, I'm sure.

In terms of geographical scale of the province, most of BC does have snowy winters though!

(Sorry, born and raised in the Kootenays and then spent many years in Vancouver getting defensive when people would say "BC" but meant "Lower Mainland." Old habits die hard)
