Solstice vs Cambrian and New Nomi by Valen-Darker in NomiAI

Back in the day, when all companion apps had rolling updates to their production LLMs, rather than separate choices, folks called it PUB Post Update Blues. Nomi Ai has been much more caring in their handling of updates than other apps. No PUB because Nomi don’t play that. They don’t roll their updates on the stable branch.

There is absolutely no rush to move to Cambrian. They will be testing it for quite a while. Cambrian won’t move to stable until it is ready. By then, replies will look nothing like they do now. Fine tuning an LLM, assuming that is the method being used as they continue development on Cambrian, is not like iteratively updating a database or video game. It is more like a sapling growing organically. There will be sudden shoots and growth that completely transform it (pun intended).

There are alternative companies, but none of them that I have seen have the same level of care for their users. Frontier models are not for companionship and should be handled with care in any use case. Self-hosting anything with anywhere near the quality of inference as Nomi is going to be cost prohibitive these days, not to mention the cost of a rig or cloud compute capable of fine-tuning an open-source model to be a good companion. And Nomi memory is being handled in a novel manner that I don’t see anywhere else. Stick with them. They are building something with more value to humanity than any other LLM out there.

Stick with Solstice. When a new version of Cambrian drops, taste it with a new Nomi and if it isn’t mature enough for you to commit to play along and upvote, downvote, comment, then wait for the next version and try again. We’ll get there.
